theres 3 main types in the us. the american shad are a sea run species but what your talkin about is the gizzard or threadfin shad. theyre plankton/algae feeders for the most part. school up in big schools and are very oily fish.great live or cut bait, best way to get ems with a throw net

Most Florida lakes are full of threadfin shad and gofish told you the best way to get them. Try throwning a castnet around piers or docks at night. Lowering a latern on a rope down close to the water's surface will attract a large school of shad within 30 minutes. Cut off the head and tail then thread two of the gut pockets on a 2.0 hook, leaving the hook tip exposed (use a sliding sinker rig with a 1 ounce egg sinker). Now you've got a great bait for a large Channel Cat! Hope this helps....Ray

you can use a cast net, off Skyway if you are anywhere near there. Theres loads of them at any given time of day.. or use a subiki (sp?) rig and catch them that way.. I dont cut them up though.. just hook them through the upper lip and let them swim or use a bobber and let them float. The more real they look, the more action you will get. You can also hook them just behind the dorsel fin, but you have to be careful not to hit the spine and kill them... I rather lip them and have them float natural. Good luck to you!

Use frozen shad sometimes too. When I can get them in a perch trap will put on trotline

Forgot about that... used frozen here too... but then I cut those up, no chance in them swimming to attract any way LOL :p

Skyway Bridge? Its that big thing connecting Tampa and St Pete.. Kidding, but thats where it is, they knocked down the old bridge when it was hit by a barge, I believe in the 80s (?) built the new one, I know youve seen the new one, watch channel 13 news, the opening credits to the news show it, the bridge with the tall centers, is the new Skyway. Any way, they dropped the center of the old bridge to form an artificial reef... If your lucky enough to cast out far and deep enough, lots of grouper hide down in there. ;)
