I took my daughter and the two grandkids to the Rainbow River on Friday. We motored up to the spring at the headwaters and drifted almost to the end at the Withlacoochee River. I started out tryin the usual bass lures ( plastic worms, tubes, creatures, frogs, spinners, etc.) the bream would nip at them and the bass ran away from them. The river is clear as glass. Kind of like fishin in a aquarium. My 4 year old Grandaughter chose a orange twin tail grub out of her brothers tackle box because it looked like her favorite color Fruitloop. I tied a 1/16 oz. jig head on her Barby pole and threaded the ugly orange grub on it. First cast she made that made it out of the boat attracted the attention of a 5 lb. bass. A big bream beat the bass to the lure and the little old Barby pole bent double. Next cast she hooked a small bass and then three more bream. I'll tell ya what. Old grampa was feelin kinda silly fishin with my fancy bass gear. I got my knife and scissors out and started carvin little funny lookin shapes out of a pumpkin green colored worm. I threaded the creations onto a 1/8 oz. jig head and the fun began. We didn't catch anything big but we lost count of the bream and small bass we fooled. I guess the fish had never seen anything as weird as the baits we were usein so they were striking to kill.
I wish I had brought the tackle box that had my Lobi Baits that I won from Capt. Kev in one of the trivia contests here on WIF. I know they would have worked great in this river. If you have a chance to fish the Rainbow bring your ultra-lite and tiny creature baits that look like grass shrimp. Be sure to bring your camera to this river. We saw Otters,Deer,Turkeys and all kinds of ducks and wading birds. Just drift with the current and swim your baits close to the bottom. The water is clear and the fish are used to tubers and canoes so they are not people shy.
