Last week Trout fishing opened in inland ILL.and Moline Ill. has a small pond right in the middle of town that the State stocked 1000 Rainbows about two weeks ago. Something to do with a urban fishing program. I will try to get down there and get some pics and post them. Schoe

are you talking about prospect park?
Schoe

No, I guess prospect wasn't ready yet this year so they put the Trout in Riverside Park again, same as last year. Thanks for asking.
I've been down there a couple of times to take some pics but seemed to be at the wrong time as no one had any Trout, I will keep trying and post when I get some. Schoe

Had luck some times when thier not bitting with a little trick. At walmart you can buy a jar of feeder eggs and what I do is cut the top of a beer can off and fill half with small gravel and just a little bit of the feeder eggs and juice, stir and toss out high and far making a loud sprikling sound on the water. the trout come running because that's how they are feed in the farms. The gravel gives you the great sound of food but when they come they smell it but can't find much except your bait and the little bit of egg from the jar. I favor lures like kastmaster with a blue stripe or a panther martin spinner with a little fly tail. We kill'em early morning on top with the lures, use 4lb test for ultimate casting range. bait fishing I use pautzke's Ball's O Fire Green or Red label with half a mini marshmellow sliding sinker with a 2 hook rig size 8 golden egg hook. Taking my 2 boys this coming weekend they planted trout in our local lake also. they are idaho farm trout might taste good cause they are cold water truot but we release the only up to 14 inches but fun.

Thanks for the tip Tdpasser, I've been down there to the pond I wrote about but haven't been able to catch any or no one had caught any either so I could get some pictures to post.
Our Deer season is this weekend but after that I will try your suggestion and see if that will work here. Thanks Schoe

Yeah, thanks for the tip. We're not close enough to get to IL, but I hear there are a few new programs like these starting up in TN. I can't wait. But there's something nagging me about how much less of a sport it is to fish where the little fellars are stocked. But they sure taste fine when you're eating them...

I didn't know trout were so close to the Quad-Cities. I've never caught a trout. In Iowa you need a regular state fishing license, trout license, and a trout stamp before you can even step foot into one of them Northern Iowa Trout Streams. You can fish ponds or lakes in Iowa that have trout, you just can't harvest any trout without a trout license and trout stamp. I have never felt that it was worth the extra money or the long drive. However, this Moline park might be just what I need. However, I have some quick questions for those of you who know this park. This isn't one of those "kiddie" parks for only young children, is it? I know a few parks in Davenport and Muscatine have parks just for kids, no adults are allowed to fish them under penalty of law. Are there any posted rules, with restrictions, etc? Do you just need a Illinois Fishing License to fish for them in this pond, or do you need any trout license or other license/stamp to fish this pond? Can you harvest them with just an Illinois, or to harvest them do you have to have another license/stamp? Thanks for answering my questions. I wish Iowa would do this, I mean we have several trout hatcheries only a few hours drive (afterall the sourthern Iowa hatcheries take walleye and such north, why can't the northern trout hatcheries bring trout to the cold water or deep water lakes in the south).

Ron,
The place we are talking about, Riverside Park , used to be I think, just for kids years ago. I'm not sure it was law but maybe a common courtesy that the majority of adults adhered to for the kids to have a place to go. But as years rolled on that all changed.
The local Conservation Club used to stock it with Carp and some cats and people would let their Goldfish go in the lake when they got tired of them. It was nothing to catch a 10 to 12 inch goldfish on dough balls when fishing for carp.
It was quite a ways from my house but not too far for a bike ride whenever I had the chance.
The city drained it a few years ago and dug parts of it out deeper and started things all over.
The reason for the Trout ending up there is because another pond in Moline, Prospect Park, where the state used to stock trout has been going through a face lift the last couple years and will more than likely get the Trout next year.
The only thing you will need is a current license, and an inland Trout stamp. The limit has been 5 in the past so I presume that will stay the same. Good luck, Schoe

Schoe, Trout season started October 21st, at 5:00 AM, at Prospect Park, they went back to Prospect after 2 years at Riverside. I went there about 6 AM, caught my limit of 5 after a few hours. They're fun as heck to catch, and good eatin' too!

I think I told you folks that my neighbor gave me a couple of Trout that were caught in a city pond and I took the time to grill them tonight for dinner along with some Turtle that I thawed out today.
It was a dinner fit for a king. We also fixed some of that new orange colored Cauliflower with cheese sauce.
Heres some pictures of the preparation and the meal. Schoe

Place is old gravel pits that used to be country hunting an fishing place,
they cleaned it all up an stocked em with trout bout year or so ago
Have not heard much about anyone really "tearing" them up but do know
they catch em
What I heard was mostly that Berkley power bait
LOL them pits was our catfishing place, could be the big old cats in there
were eating em as fast as they could stock em too
There are some real big catfish in there, one has busted me off in same
corner 2 times now
strips line to bottom of pit then "bang" it breaks
Never have gotten a look at it cept for the swirl as it takes the bait
Leep telling myself I am gonna have to get bigger gear an put some
braid on it an see what that dang thing is :-)

Hello to Everyone!
I am new to this site and really enjoy everything I have seen espiecally the RECIPES!!!! MMMMMMMMMMM GOOD!!! :)
Browsing through hear I noticed the Trout section. I saw a few Iowa members and wanted to add a few things about our Trout program here in the state:
1.) We have no season for our program, it is open year round:cool: No having to wait for the day it opens. Every day is trout day here in Iowa.....:)
2.) We have an Urban Program here in our state during the winter months also. This year is the first year the stocked West Lake here in the Quad Cities. It is a great program for the kids, and adults alike. They do this to introduce trout fishing to more people. Check out the IA DNR site for more info....
3.) Yes, for some people here in Iowa it is a longer drive to go up to NE IA to hit the streams. But in my opinion it is worth it!!! The scenery is awesome, the people you meet are great and friendly, and the quality and quantity of fish you catch is incredible. For some of you IL residents I highly recommend you try these streams and you will see what I mean.
Thanks again to all who have made this site possible!!:)
Time to head back to the recipe section and see what I may try for dinner. Schloe are you cooking tonight?????? I'll post some of my fav's later.....

Honda,
I have spent many a day on the streams in Iowa, Big Mill and Little mill were a couple of my favorites. They used to also stock a Forrest Preserve lake witht he brooders. I think the name was Dalton?
I have also fished West Lake more times than I can remember. Used to be a favorite crappie hole of mine.
One thing I do find curious is them stocking the trout in there. If I remember correct they stocked tiger musky in there about 20 years ago and I would think that they would just make a meal out of the unsuspecting trout.
Anyways I do agree 100% about the scenery in that area and the people in the local towns were very friendly. What i liked most was I could spend the day there and might only see one other fisherman all day.

Ron-
Yes, I know both the Mill Creeks you are talking about. Have fished them numerous times over the years. It has been about a year since I have been to them. My favorite between the two is Little Mill, since it is an unannounced stream and seems to have less pressure. Seems to me like the last few years though, Big Mill has really gone down hill. More people from Dubuque and Quad City areas have learned of them and they get hit tremendously hard during the warmer months. Trash being left behind has gotten ridiculous, and usually leave w/ a bag or two full. The same goes for Dalton POND sometimes. I really like Dalton for a short drive from Davenport for night fishing. Have pulled some nice ones there in the spring and in the fall after they refill it w/water.
West Lake and some of the other "Urban" lakes w/ trout were stocked primarily for ice/intro to trout people. They stay really close to shore, about 6' to 8' foot out. I think a few probably met the muskies you spoke of and word got out to the rest of the gang! :-) When I read it in October about the plan to stock, I was shocked and happy at the same time. I have not been there since the newest stocking occured, last time I was there was end of November.
I really am addicted to the streams farther north!!! Some of my favorites are: Big Paint, Little Turkey, North and South Bear, Trout Run and Trout River, Waterloo Creek and Coldwater, and then the list continues to go on and on. I mainly spin fish most of them, and have a extra pole along for bait fishing also. Like to camp at most of them or close by them. One thing nice also is that up there they have multiple streams all within 20 minutes of each other. I am heading up to Dorchester for the New Years holiday w/friends for an "annual" thing we do @ Big Joes Campground. Nice cabins there and the fishing is awesome. I'd recommend to everyone to check it out. He has a website, just do a search.
Well have a great Christmas and New Year to all here!!! Best of wishes-
Shawn
