Here is a link to Ohio State University web page on Pond management

Scroll down some on the page an there is an how to article on how to build
a wire mesh fish trap

you might need to adjust some of the dimensions an the instructions are real basic
but should give you some place to get started

bread or fish pellet you buy at feed store would work for gills an stuff you might wanna trap as bait

Cottonseed..... use to get it at any feed mill .. comes in small brick form. Good for all kinds of fish and stays longer.

HI soups! Thanks for posting tip, I never worked with traps before, I bet you got some good designs for them too??

What I posted was "free" most everything I could find was for sale as regards fish traps :-)

If you got design or have built one would love to see the plans too, know from what I have seen you
would do it RIGHT if you decided to build one

I think basic design dependant on the opening size could be good for all of
them
Heck they can be built out of twigs an twine for "survival" you know that you old Eagle Scout!

I have seen great designs, but they are available on open web I am still looking for something more detailed than what I posted hopefully someone will chime in with something

Would be great info for the forum

Ok, I'll explain gill traps since that is what I use.

Basic gill trap - use 1/4 in wire mesh. *(I get it at Homedepot in the fencing section)*

Make a tube approx 1ft in diameter. create a cone on each end with an opening about 2 inches on the small end and 1 ft in diameter on the big end.

Attatch the cones inside of the tube.

Cut door in the tube and use a larger piece to make a door.

Toss in what ever you want to use as bait and put in about 3-4 ft of water.

If you have 2 put one going one direction *(like North to south)* and the other the opposite *(east to west)*

box gill trap - use 1/4 in wire mesh. *(I get it at Homedepot in the fencing section)*

cut the top and bottom squares , 3 ft by 3 ft.

Cut 1 strip 1 ft by 16 ft.

Attatch strip as shown in picture.

In center of V that points towards the center cut out a hole 2 in wide by 4 in tall as a entrance for the fish.

make a center square 6in X 6 in that goes from top to bottom and attatch.

Cut opening into cneter square *(should be about 5 in by 5 in)* and create door over it. This will be used to hold the bait.

Cut section out of the top to be used as a door.

Place in approx 1 - 5 ft of water.
