There are many good lines on the market, and we all have our favorite,
you hear a lot of fishermen say, that fish broke my line an i am changing
to another one, factor in that there may be small chance that there may
be a defect in a spool of line, lets say for now we all have perfect line
of our choice and the line breaks,Did the user break the line or Did the
fish break the line the biggest part of the time????KIRK

Kirk, I believe that the answer is neither. The stress exerted on the line broke the line. In other words, both the fish, and the fisherman are exerting pressure in opposite directions which cause the line to break. Other factors could be line abrasion and the fish getting the line wrapped up in something.

I partly agree with you with asraison an logs, but take that out and put
man against fish,i belive the fishermen are at fault due to mishandling
the fish and having the drag set wrong, not allowing the rod and reel
do the work for you.IMO KIRK

and then ya got these big ole cats (I use to catch) that will just cut your line....Guess that's called be line abrasion... I'm lookin' to go to steel leaders now.

Line abrasion?
I generally call it (*&#$*(&)&(&)@*#E^)&*(*$_(^&*()()())_
when it happens to me :-)
Lot depends on water you are fishing
Big fish that live in "garbage" will dive for it an wrap you round some pretty nasty stuff
so it don't matter much how you play the fish, he gots you pretty well snookered
Big difference between fishing in open water like res or lake and fishing in river where you
are baiting right up in some nasty brush piles or other structure

kirk, if you want to find out how much presure you can put on a line, tie a scale to a tree and lock the reel down you will find that almost all reels will not have more than 25lbs of drag. what breaks most lines is nicks in the last 15 ft of the line.any time i'am going for big fish i cut the last 15 ft of line off my line. also check the rod tip and make sure there are no nicks in the eye. Robin, that is good advice on cutting back on the line if you think you
may have a nick in the line,if you have smooth fingers you can nornally feel
a defect, you can also take a micrometer and check for any changes
i will do that on a big bulk spool to make sure it does not change
+ or - 5 of stated dia.if it does send it back.again IMO KIRK

timotha7 had small ones fly over the boat a time or two lol. settin the hook that hards just a habit from when i was a boy. had to reel down to the water and youd end up over your head on the hook set with them old fiberglass rods.that and a short amount of line out dont go together well:D

up with
Lets see, we had the 1.50 canepoles complete with line an riggin
then the 202's which were steel geared an really worked pretty good,
then graduated to the Johnson centurys, which could cast country mile

We buy the biggest, the bestest and the most expensive..........and we end up with the cheapest doing the most work.........Funny ain't it....Mrs. Soupy will use "only" the Zebco 808 for everything from catfishin' to bait catchin'.....Can't get her to move up to the bait casters or anything else.....Must be something to them Zebcos...
Timotha7

Heck them old Zebco's with steel gears in those black cases were
build better than a lot of the high dollar reels they sell now a days
with plastic gears
I still fish on a "budget" don't have a bunch of gear, and a lot of
what I have I have had for years, like the old berkley lightening
rods and shimano combos I use for most of my fishing
Only can use two rods at a time here (an I only have two hands :D)
an never really got to where I bought a bunch of stuff
Seems that certian things work different times of year and that
is pretty consistent with bout anywhere I have ever fished
I figger if I am catching fish, then I don't need to pay much attention to the ads that are selling things to "catch fish"

Whem i buy a new reel i usually try to get some new line put on it within a few weeks because the stuff that comes pre-spooled with the reel is usually pretty cheap stuff (and i am very hard on reels/line....meaning that it's always getting dirt and stuff in it so have to constantly am cleaning it) but back to the question...i agree it usually is both the fish & the fisherman!!:)

however the line breaks is not important. was is important is you can always blame it on the big one that got away. (unless you are with someone)

ya need to take the time, to take care of your reels while you are out. Don't set it down in the dirt, don't drag it through the pile of leaves. Simple things your grandparents and their parents knew all too well. Take care of what you have because money don't grow on trees

Growing up i never thought of it that way. Then my pops made me by my own stuff and i learned the importance of taking care of stuff.

Ok, with perfect line, properly working gear, and nothing between fish and rod but water, the only thing that would cause the line to break is operator error. Drag set too tight, or snubbing the line trying to turn a fish are two ways I can think of to cause the line to break. Also cranking against the drag is common problem, this causes line twist on spinning reels which weakens line and on a bait caster it is very hard on the pawl and worm gear.

Thanks Patrick for your input on this line thing, most of the time we dont
have those perfect conditions, but overall i think like you do, operator
error most of the time,I remember 1 time on Barkley, the wife had around
a 50 lb channel and played it well,it was up next to the boat to quick
and wasant wore out,and i didnt think and tryed to net it and when i
touched it ,took off and about pulled her out of the boat, well it got loose
but it was Nettor Error not the line,if looks could kill  you wouldnt be readin this. :D Kirk
