I know for a fact that Gar will eat anything a catfish will eat. Getting them hooked will be your hardest problem. I have reeled in a few that had my line tangled in there teeth. I have heard of people tageting them using a red rag an their hooK. If I wanted to catch them on purpose I fish out of the main current with a trebble hook. On that hook I would use a handsize piece of red rag that had been soaked in catfish, bluegill or any other baitfishes guts. Actually you could make a small bag out of the rag and put some guts inside. If you got into an area were gar were, you should catch more than you want.
what do u mean rag???

bwob I have used a piece of nylon rope tied to a jig head, The kind of rope that unravels, cut it to the length you want unravel it then tie it to your jig head, for gar you don't even need the hook, but if you want to catch other fish leave the hook.
The gar's teeth get tangled in the nylon strands when he hits your lure.

That's why I said use a jig head and tie the nylon strands to that to make your lure. I thought you were talking artificials all along.
