The wind was unforgiving and there wasn't much current in the Mississippi this morning. I think we located some suspended cats and a few on the bottom but they had lockjaw. I only had one anchor along and it made it difficult to fish right with the wind blowing like it was.

Needless to say we didn't stay long and no fish pics this time. Schoe

Stoney, you folks were sure Lucky that dam tornado missed your places and it sounds like it was too close for comfort.

I Will try for the blues and channels in a day or two and definitely next week as I will be south of here looking over the islands where I deer hunt which happen to have quite a few wing dams around them. Oh darn I might be forced to try them out. Schoe

Schoe, What kind of anchor are you using? We use a simple rebar anchor that we made ourselves. When i first started fishing the big river i was using a scoop style houseboat anchor which worked but it was about sixty pounds and it was a booger to get up!!! Now i use rebar anchors after seeing the mississippi connection boys anchors. They are about seven pounds max and hook up great!!! And if its hung up good just wrap it around a cleat and back up the rebar will bend out and let loose so it'll come up with ease. Bend it back out and your ready to go! A drift bucket(ol five gallon bucket with alot of holes in the bottom) or a drift sock will help out alot with the wind especially if in heavy current. Just drop it off the back of the boat and let the current take it out about 10 feet or so.

Where we find most of our blues is in spots with heavy current seems the heavier the better. Last time we were on the white i anchored off right in front of a bend next to the sandbar. There was a tree that had to be fifty or sixty feet long that went under the boat. It got by the anchor rope somehow and went right under the boat. It was so big that i raised the motor up and had to walk to the front as it had the whole back of the boat almost out of the water!!!! It washed out and luckily on hung one pole.. Talk about close call. Be careful out there.

Good luck out there next time!!! I'm thinking about hitting it in the morning just depends on how i'm feeling.. I'm on baby watch tonite so if the wind will settle down and i'm not to deprived "Its on!"!!!

Oh hows that new boat treating ya?

Three Rivers, I love my new boat and thanks for asking. It should serve my purposes very well. It's like anything else new, it will take getting used to.

I like the idea of the re bar anchors and will have to make a couple. It sounds like they will be a lot easier on the back and hands.

I'm in the process of making two wind sock buckets. A couple of my fishing pals use them and they work slick. I should have mine finished today.

Haven't been down looking over the deer situation around the islands where I am going to hunt yet, but I'm going to try to get down there the next couple days. I think there is some good areas for blues down there and am anxious to try for them.

I'm having a problem locating Skippie's and Shad here and cant buy either around here frozen. I saved some Spanish Mackerel from Fla. this spring and am tempted to try that as it's nice and oily, who knows?

I have to get my butt in gear for the Channel cat fishoff, my partner has turned in 14 lbs. or so. The wind is blowing now as I write this in gusts up to 30 MPH so I think fishing is out for today. Mabe I should work on finishing my new deck to keep mama happy. Yes we still have to do that once in a while even after 35 yrs. together. Later Schoe

Good luck in your search for one of those big channels!! I'm only bluecat experienced with rod and reel so i'm just as curious about information on them!!!

If your looking for skips and theres plenty of current around the tips of those dikes. The current seam coming off the dike where the eddy meets the current is the place to shoot for. I usually will throw straight off the end of the dike in the main current and let my jigs drift back a pretty good ways and drag it straight up the current seam. If theres skips up that far they'll be around in the current there somewhere. Has any been caught that far up? Another place to shoot for is any of the chutes that have current running out of them pretty good usually the water coming out of them will be really muddy compared to the rest of the river. Right in the clear water right beside the mudline is a good spot also. I use the small hair type jigs white in color with two or three on the line. Hope this helps
