Gar! help!!!!

ok, so me and my friend like fish the canal and there are MONSTER gar in there, but it seems when they take it they like grab it from the side, so when ever I set the hook, the worm comes out of it's mouth or..the line breaks...people have said that rapping thread around the hook works? my friend tried using a trebble hook but they werent taking it. any help?

Gar can be caught like you were told,by using yarn so the it hangs up
in there teeth,but i prefer to use cut bait,try a nylon coated steel leader
at least 12 inches long and remember that the Gar has a long nose full
of teeth so it takes a while for the bait to really get back to the mouth,
when the Gar picks it up and takes off he may go 20 yards and stop,
what he is doing is getting the bait in position to swallow it,wait till he
makes the second run and when your line starts to tighten up then set
the hook.Try this method next time out and im sure you will start catching
more and losing less.Let us know how it works for you,Good Luck and be

thanks kirk, just have to wait for my friend to get up...he told me to get up at 6:30 to go fishing with him, so I got up at 6:30 and it's 7:38 right now! and he hasn't called!:mad:.....but thanks again kirk:)

Can't think of any reason why a man would believe a thing Kirk would tell you about Gar fishing.... Since he threw back a STATE RECORD GAR while fishing in a catfish tournament. (without havin' it recorded)

capt. all them smileys mean your speechless? say it aint so,must be sick or sumptin lol bwob 5/0 circle hook,cutbait an tie bout 5 inches of braided nylon to it an brush it out ......they hit the cut bait and git the teeth tangled in the nylon.......wait till they double your rod an keep it doubled fore ya pick it up though,an dont set the hook jus start crankin.......or watchin the drag scream lol:D

The wife caught the fish and i realeased it without giving any thought to
it being a record fish.Fish was worth $3000.00 Look on wifes face priceless.

I have caught gar in excess or 3 ft on trotline. Also snagged one on a treble with liver catfishin but more on trotline. They take bait and get wrapped up in the leader and drown themselves. Ugly as sin and worthless I think but darn they fun. This one was on Trotline and is longer then the tailgate of a riding lawnmower trailer

hmmm,, try using your photobucket, and right click the IMG under the pic... hit copy, then paste to here, works for me

easy, I copied your properties into my photobucket, then under the pic, go to the third one down that says IMG... not the HTTP one.. right click, hit copy, then paste to here... Then again, I am THE woman. :p LOL

still...those are some NICE fish...I've seen that size gar in my canals...

( IM begging you somebody post in my other thread in THIS forum, I need answers because me and my friend are about ready to throw our rods against the cement those carp are makin me mmmaaaaadddd!:mad: )
