The name is "Soupy" I live in Western KY (Dekoven) right on the Ohio River.. I fish the holes between the Shawneetown,Ill Bridge down to Cave-In- Rock,Ill , which includes Caseyville,KY TradeWater River and that other river on Ill side ( Saline)...
Most of the time I'm after the BIG'UNS ... Blues ,Flats and sometimes Channels.. Pole fish , mostly but, sometimes a little trotlinein'....
My biggest fish so far on pole and line is 67.5 lbs and I have pictures of my smallest.. () .. Bait used mostly is cut Shad, SkipJacks and some stink baits.....
Equipment used: Penn reels (209s, 309s and one 220) mostly 50 to 80 lb line ,treble hooks 1 up to 3/0 s.
On the water I'm in my G3 2072 boat pushed with a Yamaha 90hp 4 stroker..
If you ever see me , you won't forget me.... Cabin on the boat and "The RedNeck Yacht Club" down both sides ...
Come go fishin' with me or just tell us about your trips.:D

Thanks Maurice:...
Well, I guess it's time....
I sold that boat the other day and now the man that I sold it too wants to take me fishing Sunday...in my big boat?? Well, anyhow, I said yes.. So Sunday morning I'll be letting somebody else pull my boat for the first time ('cause I ain't got my truck back yet)..
I hope to have some good pictures and maybe a couple of fish to show off.. The weather is holding off for now but, not looking good for Sunday but, with the new cabin on it I think we are gonna still go try it. I'll let ya know.

I got bored with the whole damn race.....went to sleep. I think they need to make some rule changes on that track. How can you be leading the race and on a re-start (after a caution) , be in 30th place.????? Why didn't they let the slower cars come back around the track to the back of the pack????

I know what you're talking bout now, I never had used those little
command things up top to post so I was not for sure of what you
meant

The software was updated last week, I tend to think that the feature
probably was changed then
Looks like all you got to do is click the "insert img" button an then put in the url to the picture at whereever it is stored and it will "bracket" it automatic for you now

June 30 2007 will be the First Open (that I know of) Catfish Tournament held at Caseyville, Ky..
Here in this photo is two of the Best Catfishermen in KY..... ( well, that's what they told me anyhow) .
They were Pre-fishing the area...
The one with the hat is "Dago" ( the feller I posted a picture of a few months ago with his 80 blue he caught... The other guy , I didn't know but, the first name he brought up when I stopped to talk to them was Yellow Cat.... One of our KY members on WIF.... Reckon he must know him 'cause he shore talked bad about him....
I just wanted to get some pictures of his boat and the way he had it set up... Nice !
These guys were trying to talk me into fishin' that tournament with them.... I think they just wanted my money....
Ifin' some of you have a chance.... stop in next Sat. the 30th and watch or join in on the fun. I'll be there for sure....If nuttin' else , just to watch.

Sat. June 30 2007....
River is Steady (up a little) at 15.7 at Shawneetown,Ill
Weather will be nice. Partly Cloudy ...temp high around 85...wind NorthEast 3 to 7 mph........Barometer steady at 30.7... Some of the creeks around here are running muddy with the last rain we've had... So I'd say the feeding conditions will be Moderate at the mouths of these creeks....Crooked Creek, Camp Creek, Trade Water River, O'nan Ditch,Warden Slough and Saline River.
Live bait has been hard to find but, have been seen early in the mornings (4 AM) around the boat ramps and other rocky areas.
Big Cats have been spotted going back to their summer holes....Spawn is just about over.
Time to go get 'em boys... Good Luck Sat. ifin' you're fishin' in this tournament.

06-29-2007, 06:51 AM
As always they are still screwing with the Ohio River.... It dropped to 14 + yesterday (Thurs) and now it's up again to 15.0 ft and is suppose to stay there thru Sat.

Barometer is at 30.07 and steady...Creeks have settled down a little...Still no live bait running yet.

Saturday...Partly sunny with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 80s. Northeast winds around 5 mph.

Again, good luck to those who are going to fish in the Duracat Catfish Tournament Sat. at Caseyville,KY

River Stage 15.1 ft and steady... Water Clear , Very little current..
Barometer 30.07 and steady
No Live Bait running yet.... I did find some shad and craws in a ditch earlier today.
Sorry to say.... My wife will have this weekend off from Wally-World and she says that I am taking her fishing Sat.... Don't look like I'll be in the tournament....You boys lucked out this time... See you in the AM Sat.... Good luck to all....

And I did hear that "Dago" was Pre-fishing and that he has got a couple tied to a tree above Dekoven,KY...If I can get there about 3 in the AM , I will go get them for myself.:party0045:
Did hear also too, that they are having another fishing tournament in Union County KY area same day.. (Morganfield,KY ..Moffit Lake) So, this should cut the crowd down a little.

As we all know now ...I didn't make it to this Caseyville,KY tournament....Good thing I didn't... Heard the other day some 400 pounds of fish was caught and it took over 200 lbs to when the tournament... I haven't heard all the numbers yet but, this was enuff to scare me off.I ain't caught 200 lbs of fish this year.

In my last post I said:" to when the tournament" Now who would right sumthin like dat.. Sorry folks.. It was s'ppose to be "WIN" the tournament.

Ain't heard no more about that Caseyville,KY tournament... and didn't hear much about it (locally) before it happened.. But did hear a lot of guys asking why I didn't tell them about it.. Some even said they would've like to had fished in it... I just said "I dunno" guess 'cause I don't belong to that club...But, they had some good questions about that tournament.. Who put it on?, How much did it pay....Are they going to do it again? and Why didn't we know about it??? and again I said "I dunno".
It's none of my business but, seems to me ifin, you're gonna do a tournament and it's gonna to be an "Open Tournament" to the public.. The public should've have been told about it... Just my two cents....

Anyhow...I reckon fishin' in my neighborhood still ain't up to par yet...I couldn't tell you for sure ('cause I ain't been) Just going by what some of the locals are tellin' me. Most of the guys that have stopped by to talk to Ole Soups are Bass fishermen and have been hittin' he small farm ponds and lakes.. Some have been lucky enuff to catch a couple of nice Large Mouth Bass from them... Did hear of one 5lb 6oz Bass caught in the old PM lake (called Horse Shoe Lake) down here close to home.... Not bad for a hot day.
Ain't heard of any "Big" cats bein' caught lately....Guess they waitin' for me to git back to fishin'...
Well, things are startin' to come together around the house here and maybe one day this week me and the RedNeck Yacht will be back on the river.....Reckon I'll even go do the J.T. Myers Dam see ifin' I can git the nack of fishin' around that thing....I guess ifin' I weren't so skeered of dams ,I would enjoy fishin' them a little more...Those guys that fish up there close to that dam , skeer me just watchin' them....
Well, might artta git for now...Oh, by the way, Ole Lyndell (with two L s) told me to say "Hey" to all you guys... So HEY ! and he hopes he can git off from that ole mines for a couple of days and git back to fishin'...But, somebody has got to make us a livin'. Later gang...... I got fishin' to do.

Soupy you are correct about the tournament notice to the public, you and i both know who put it on,and we got 1 of there members here, and your
right its there business, but if they were to speak to THE BOSS perhaps
they might get better exposure, then again they may not want any. there
is my 2 cents, now we got 4 cents :confused0024: Kirk

Same here Soupy, heat index for the past 3 weeks has ranged from
105 to 116 degrees and now the weatherman says it is going to start
getting HOT,was thinking of fishing the Tournament on the 17th 18th,
bout decided against it,dont want no Boiled Fish, the night temps are
getting down under 90,no rains that amount to much, just enough to make
the grass grow an its to dang hot to mow,may have to get some goats:evilgrin0039: Kirk

Just enuff to get the grass wet so I'll have to put off mowin' one more day...
Did just get word that one of my fishin' buddies (Dago) was fishin' Sunday (or Saturday) up by Shawneetown Bridge and caught three fish the weighed in over 100lbs... (2 at 48lbs and 1 at 20 lbs) Maybe, just maybe this is the start of something down our way.....

Or he's found a fish market that is sellin' cheap fish.

Yep....Blues were running this past weekend...........at least for these two old river rats....First blue we've caught in a month or two.....Sat we took in 5 or 6 from 5 to 15 lbs and Sunday the bigger ones 24lbs and 28lbs run for a short time.... Several channels were caught also.... Now the weather is on the change and the river has started dropping again...... Maybe next week we'll have something better to report.... I think it's getting close to trotline time.:confused0024:

Ok...............Sept 19th 2007 and I ain't found no "Big'uns" yet.........Hell, I hardly found anything this year...Have heard my buddy "Dago" has been catchin' a few (nice ones) But, he's a lot better fisherman than I am...
The "NET BOYS" are back already.. I reckon these guys are comin' from down around Salem or Smithland area ( wonder why they don't stay down there) Been told the fishin' is better down there than up here...Guess it would be....'cause they up here screwin' up our fishin' with their nets !
Anyhow... Me and the wife are gonna try to get up to Clinton,Ill (on the 5 th OCT) for a couple of days of fishin' on that big pond they have up there....Some of the WIF boys are gonna be there too also....So, ifin' there's anybody else in KY that wants to go.. Just holler at me and we can all drive up that way together ( and get lost)

Welp...it's time for another fishin' update for the Ohio River in my area.....
Some are catchin' and some ain't..... I just happened to be one of them "Ain't" guys.....
O I'm catchin' a few but, nuttin' to brag about......couple of Blues up around 15 lbs and one Ole Flat at 39.5 lbs... The wife bettered her personal best with an 11 lb Blue the other day.... Have heard some of those stories about one guy catchin' 300 lbs in one day on rod and reel and I talked to one of the "netter" boys that had 2000 + lbs in his boat at the time I was talkin' to him.....He had some nice ones that day but, no 100 lbders.....And that's what I'm lookin' for. (don't know what I'd do with it ifin' I caught it) ... That's my goal for this year.... 100 lb Blue.... ( would be nice)..
Me and the wife did make it up to Clinton,Ill to fish with the WIF gang up there.. That Clinton Lake was beautiful, if you like to boat ride and jet ski but, for this ole country boy ....give me a river !
Gofish... came thru for us again... He got in a pretty good mess of fish everytime he was on the water.....Couple of the other WIF members (names I'd rather not mention like Kenny, Schoe and 'giller) was there like me , just for the fun of it.
Did meet some nice people campin' next to the WIF camp.... Jeff and his gang (family) They all seem to be pretty good bunch of people...Matter of fact Jeff signed on to the WIF group after we all got home, glad to have him... Now maybe he can teach me how to catch them scale fish (bait to me) ...
Well, all and all it was a fun time at Clinton,Ill... Can't wait 'till KY Lake party comes around...
Me and the boss lady are goin' out to check on a RV this week.... Might have me another home on wheels soon....Least we'll have somethin' to lay our heads down in when we are watchin' gofish catchin' all them tadpoles.
Weather really sucks in our area this week (10/19/2007) It's been hot and tornados everywheres around us.... Hope to be back on the river this week.
I got Fishin' to do !

Oh Clinton ain't so bad Kirk We hit it on an unusual weather weekend for October. I was there last year same weekend highs were around 60 deg lows in the 40's at night. Campground was empty sept for a few hunters and fisherman little to no boat traffic and the fishin was great. Wow what a difference a year and 30 degrees makes.

Good report Soupy thanks for the compliment. I too am looking foward to Ky in the spring hope I can make it down. maybe show ya how to catch some of them scaley beasts (bait) and you could show me how to catch some of the big kitties. biggest one i ever got was a 35 lb flat over 10 years ago. since then i think 10lbs in the channel variety has been my biggest.

Soupy_1us
10-19-2007, 07:12 AM
Jeff, don't look to me to teach you anything about catchin' them cats... I think I've forgot how to do it myself.. Hope you can make it down in the spring....Might make my stay down there a little better... ( Beats lookin' at the Capt. all the time)....
Capt. got another one of them "Home on Wheels" up here... Nice one too... well there's two more I've found... One is 34 foot and the other is like the one I'm going to look at... The 34 footer is 8 grand and the other is 4500 (what I call a "Cabover")... Both are in GREAT SHAPE !
You need to get one of them and put my picture on it. .... I'll send you the pic. :)

I seriously think we should do this one again in 08 as the weather is sure to be different. I would give the lake (and Rangers and hosts) time to heal from our first visit.

I think it would be fun to have a 4 hr. White Bass tournament on Sat. A.M. and have a 4 hr. Catfish tournament that evening or wait untill Sun. A.M.

By the way those White Bass were very good. Schoe

For those in KY that don't read the other threads.....

Fishing has picked up a little in this part of the Smithland pool (upper end, Dekoven,KY area)..
Seems like I've been chasing these things (Blues) all summer and the only place I could find them was up around the Shawneetown,Ill Bridge .. Well, good news.. they are starting to move down river...
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p115/Soupy_1us/Fishing/IMG_26711.jpg Still a little on the small side but, they're biting..
Using cut shad... (shad about 4 inches long, just cut the head and tails off) I was throwing out (from the bank) as far as I could and letting the swift water carry my 8 oz of lead down river 'til it was almost back to the bank.... About 5 to 7 foot of water just out of the grass..
River is up to 19.8 ft and the temp. is down here at Dekoven and lots of grass just at the edge of the water..
This 66 lbs were caught in about 3 hours Thursday afternoon...
The fun part was ... When you hook a 10 lb-der... In this current and in the grass , it felt like you were dragging a 50 lb-der in.....Wore my butt out.
As we all know , Blues run in "Waves" seems like today they will be 5 lbs and tomorrow they will be 10 lbs.... Well, I hit the ten lb-ders Thursday... :) I'm going back this Friday morning to see if the 50 lb-ders are running.
River looks like it's going on stand or starting to drop today, that's when we , for the most part, catch the "Big'uns"... We'll see today.

(Note): Wind and weather was out of the East Thursday.. Nasty ,windy with rain....Temp in the Mid 50's...A Few Clouds

52°F
(11°C)Humidity:82 %Wind Speed:E 5 MPHBarometer:30.03"Dewpoint:46°F (8°C)Wind Chill:51°F (11°C)Visibility:7.00 mi.This is for Friday Oct 26 2007, the only difference from Thursday is the wind....It's dropped...

Well, we've all said it "Boy we need a good Rain" ...Ok...now what, we're getting it !
Two inches so far and they're calling for that or more this week.. Ohio River at Shawneetown,ILL says it's going up to 27 ft this week....I reckon it's time to break out the trotlines and head for the bean fields !

Yep, you readin' right !

Stink Bait !... After all the trouble we (J.Y. Jim and me) went through to get them big ole night crawlers and some few shad... All we could get them fish to bite on was STINK BAIT !..
Sonny's Blood Bait ! That's the stinkie stuff I gets from Catfish Connection up there in Pana, Ill... Some kinda cheese bait with blood in it I reckon...and ya gotta use them rubber tubes thingies to put it on your line... It works !... I went after the Big Blues and caught a boat load of fiddlers.. Them fish weren't bitin' on nuttin' else... Hell, we even had a hand full of craw daddys too...Nuttin'... just Stink bait... The Misses was a might happy 'cause she likes them little fillets I get offin them little fiddlers. Ended up with a gallon freezer bag full of fillets.. Not bad for one day.
Did catch one ole blue..... Boys.. start lookin' for some rocks.. 'cause this here Blue was full of eggs.

River is comin' up again... Over 26 feet on this day.. One of the old timers stopped by and ask if I would like to go fishing with him...
Well, most of you guys know that if I ain't in my boat , I get a little nervous..
We took his boat...:confused0018:

Been fishing off the bank for the last four or five days.. Not doing too bad.... Figured about a gal. freezer bag full of fillets per day.
Today was a little different... Two fish.....We got the gal. freezer bag full of fiddler fillets but I just caught two fish......All day ! Two dang fish is all I caught, That old fart put it to me big time yesterday.......But, now I have about 6 bags of fiddler fillets in the freezer now... Still waiin' for the big'uns to start runnin'.

The year is still early yet !

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p115/Soupy_1us/Stories%20and%20Tales/FishStory004.jpg The Ohio River just West of my house (about a mile) is all but closed due to the fact that gofish has been flushin' his Wabash way too much this year.
This is at Caseyville,KY just off the Sturgeon Island in the main stream of the Ohio River.. Yep, the channel was down to one lane and it was almost closed.

Always a day late and a dollar short...Yep, I did go fishin' yesterday... More like huntin'.....Couldn't find any dang Blues no place...Did get into some nice channels though... 7 all together before it got just too hot to stay on the river.....
I reckon the smallest was about a 2 pounder and the biggest probably went about 6... Just a good mess of fish....( but,it took me a half a day to find them)
Them boys pumpin' that sand ( ya know, that mess gofish sent down to us) Well, I reckon their done for now... Didn't see 'em no place on the river that day... All them big boats are just gone !.. Might had something to do with me not catchin' nuttin', weren't nuttin' keepin' them fish stired up...
Got some honey dos to keep me busy for a couple of days and the weather ain't workin' for me right now...
After I git this stuff done , I'll head back for the river.

'cause I just ain't had no good news.
Well, now maybe this could be some good news.
Seems like our county leaders have decided to fix up our old boat ramp in Caseyville,KY, that's just down the road from me 'bout 2 miles...
They'er gonna be cleanin' er up and puttin' in some of them fancy floatin' boat docks ,so you guys with them high priced fancy boats won't be scratchin' up your bottoms on them big rocks they got all around the ramp....
Even talkin' 'bout puttin in some lights and a walkin' trail and some eatin' tables....
When and ifin' they git all this done, I'll post some picture...
We might even invite some of you down for a "fish off" or something. You'll just have to bring your campers 'cause we don't have any of them fancy motels to stay in for at least ten miles from the ramp.....
Reckon I could show y'all where all the fishermen and gals stay at another nice lake and camp grounds we have here but, then ya won't wanna fish at the new boat ramp.

Well, to start with ....It's a matter of politics right now....
I went down to see what or ifin' anywork has been started and it looks like they bushhogged the weeds a little.... Might be a long winter for this ramp repair...
I will try and keep everybody posted ...
Would like to get a bunch down here for a Grand Openin' just show this county what they could have if they'd spend a little money.
Did hear that there will be a big BBQ after it's done.... Might be a good weekend to be here.
