I know a lot of people consider Sheepshead on the lower end of the food chain but I don't mind eating them fresh so we don't take any more than we can eat in one meal.

They are a lot of fun to catch and can try your light equipment to the limit. One of my favorite places is the pilings on the bay bridge at Apalachicola Fla. We have caught some big ones out of there. Schoe

yeah kirks right about the way they hit and the smaller ones are the best eating.. when i'm fishing for sheep head i use either shrimp or fiddler crabs and as soon as i feel the first bite i count to 3 and set the hook. i normally use 8 pound test on my light action ugly stick...talk about a blast....

The Sheepshead Schoe is refering to is obviously not the same as the one we have here. Sounds as though you are in for a good time fishing for them down there in Florida.
Our midwest one is known as-- sheepshead--white perch--drum--Many other names not to be mentioned on a public forum.
I've HEARD that our local ones are good eating when smoked like carp. Mike

Soupy, the ones I was referring to are the salt water variety which have black and silver stripes on their sides. I do think they are in the drum family. The flesh is very good and nothing like the fresh water drum we get here in the rivers. Hopefully I can post some pictures of some in a week or two when I get to Fla. Schoe

Never ate salt water sheepshead, never ate the fresh water sheepshead
but have gotten into them by some of the locks on Miss when practice fishing tourneys an had a blast with them on light tackle
just catch em an let them go, can be quick action an good way to kill a few hours catching fish
an have heard they make good live or cut bait, though I have not personally tried em for that

I catch quite a few of them at my "secret spot" AKA "10 yards away from the public boat ramp" each time i go there. A couple of my friends and i tried soaking them in 7-Up (the pop) for about 45 minutes and then deep fried them. They tasted ok but you HAVE to use tartar sauce!!!:D

I think Taylor is worthy of an ATTABOY!! All to often we listen to the rumors, and just don't get in there and try new things. At least Taylor and his friends gave it their best. What the heck, tarter sauce is cheap and the lessons in youth are part of learning.
To borrow soupy's line- "Ain't no quit in that lad"  . Mike
