HOOKS
Hooks can be one of the cheapest items in your boat or in your tackle box.
But hooks are the most important here are some choices for hooks that will do the job the best.......
WIDE GAP= this is a great choice when using Live bait such as shiner's or other minnows it holds your bait well and gets a good hook set. It is not the best choice for baits like liver, worms, and dip baits. But it is a hook you should have in your box...
OCTOPUS= Is great hook for live Bait the shape of the hook is great for lip hooking bait fish. This hook tends to set in the corner of the fishes mouth which keeps the fish from dieing and makes catch and release easy, NOT CATCH AND GREASE........
CIRCLE=95% shot at hooking up in the corner of the mouth. Great choice for trot lines and jugs. Also good for rod and reel, but not for drifting. A circle hook should not be jerked like a traditional hook due to the style of the hook you will pull it clean out of the fish. Also circles may not allow you to put large baits on the hook due to the gap to shank ratio..
BAITHOLDER= Perfect choice for worms, grass hoppers, and hot dogs. This is the standard hook we all grew up on. It also will gut hook a fish with the best of them.
TREBLE AND SPRINGWOUND-TREBLE= The best hook for liver, dough, and dip baits. The spring wound hook gives you some extra grip to hold nasty baits on the best of all hooks. Be careful these babies will get ya also you can tear a fish up with them. (also known as a three legged grass hopper)
O'SHAUGHNESSY= This here is the hook we all know from crappie fishing. A thin wire hook that is a good choice for channel cats that are small but a big fish can straiten this hook out with ease.
KIRBY= Its about the same as o'shaughnessy, but is of set and this little change can help you catch more fish. Plus some kirby's are mad of a heavy wire and that could help land bugger fish....
These are just the most common hooks there are many others out there. If you plan on doing catch and release you should use a barbless hook.
Always try to use the smallest hook feasible. This will help on hook sets and give your bait a more natural presentation, you should also keep the hook point exposed this will hook a lot more fish.
HOPE THIS HELPS...................
