Joyce and I went Surf fishing with our friends Mac and Sam Sullivan this afternoon and I am writing this from their house.
We targeted Whiting and Sharks. I will post some pics when I get home later his evening.
Mac and I were kept busy baiting the girls poles and taking fish off. The poles baited for Shark failed to get bit but the light poles had four hook ups with sharks and three of them spooled the reel and broke off and were gone. Sam managed to beach a small one. I am not sure but I think it was a Sharpnose. Perhaps when I get the pics. up someone might be able to tell me for sure what it was.
It was Sams lucky day as she hooked and landed a 30 to 40 Lb. Sting Ray.

First one is a couple from Canada that were walking down the beach and she had never caught a fish so we invited her to catch a Whiting. Next is Sam with a small Shark. Then Joyce getting comfortable to drag them in. Next is Sams big Sting Ray that I am holding by his stinger. Last is me fighting a nice Shark before he spooled me.
Great day was had by all and I have a cooler full of nice Whiting to clean in the morning and wil take pics. Schoe

Schoe,
Did you cut that ray into scallops? Looks like it would make some good eating.

Schoe, Do you fillet those whiting? I'd have a ball with that pile and an eletric fillet knife. Mike

Yes we did fillet them , Mac used an electric knife to take the sides off and I cut the ribs out and skinned them. They are superb deep fried.
Bill, we didn't clean the Ray but will consider it on the next one. Any instructions on how to process one? Schoe

Schoe,
I hav'nt had processed one myself but I've watched the mates on the party boats do it.They skin out the wings and butterfly the thickest portions to make them come out about 1" thick. They say that you can then piece them into 1" x 1" squares, or use a sharp 1" biscuit cutter to punch out scallops. They are great deep fried using a batter mix.Last time I checked sea scallops were $8.00 a pound. You had a very expensive catch there.

Awesome Schoe!!
I love those whiting. There is an artificial bait called fishbites that comes in shrimp and crab scents. I have been using them since there were first released and they are whiting killers!! Saves money on dead shrimp and stays on the hook fish after fish.
We have been hammered with rain and high wind so maybe next week I can get the inflatable boat out and look for sharks too!!

Yessir buddy, My pal Mac Sullivan smoked a few the other day and they came out top shelf.
Our same group went for a while again today and the tide was running hard but despite that we managed to catch 17 large Whiting, caught and released a bunch of Hardhead Cats, several small Stingrays, and one small 10" fish that looked like a Cobia, but they aren't supposed to be in this area yet. I wish I would have taken a picture of that critter.
Some young people were riding their horses on the beach which looked like fun. Schoe

i'll second the "fishbites"...i think they are the best thing since toilet paper!....up here in Va....you catch everything from croaker, flounder, grey trout, striper on them......fish love em!...best thing is you throw a couple packs in your tackle box and your never without bait, and stay good for months...and they do stay on the hook fish after fish.....i even have a fishbite cap and fishbite shirt :D
nice mess of whiting Schoe! i look forward to fileting a ton of those soon....i never ate one but i hear they are fine eating...

Yes sir, they are fine eating fellas. We usually try all ways possible to prepare the species we catch and the Whiting have been excellent any way we fixed them. Schoe

Sharon, we are going in the morning early to try for whiting before the Spring Breakers line up on the beach. Then tomorrow, Sat. PM we are taking some friends from Wewa and a special guest from England out on a pier to try for Shark and or whatever else we can come up with.
Then Mon. AM our newest member is going to show us the ropes and take us where to fish for Sharks from my boat. I thank you again ahead of time Jimmy Stephens, and welcome aboard.

Ive eaten shark steaks, bought in the market though, not fresh caught.. I didnt care for it, too dry and strong taste to it.. maybe if it was freshly dressed it may have been better.

We haven't eaten any yet and the one we kept the other day is frozen awaiting my smoker to fire up when I get it home.
If we do any good on Sharks the next few days I will let you know. A couple of the locals here say they cut them up and keep them on ice for a day or two which gets the Amonia taste out. I will try almost anything once. Schoe

Schoe,
I fished commercially for sharks in the keys. When you catch one you want to eat cut off the head and let it bleed out good then ice it soon as possible. The steaks taste just like swordfish. Real good on the grill. Black tip, Lemon and Mako are the best eatin. Don't bother with the nurse sharks.

Pegleg,I have never had Shark but they should be good, even when i keep
Cats,I fillet them as soon as possible and soak them in ice water with
a little lemon juice, that is the way i would do Shark if i had one,is it
best to stick to the smaller ones for the best eating?Should taste like
those channels from Turkey Creek????????? Kirk

Well now that you know what's going on over there and you have met a few of our people it more than likely won't be hard to find a boat to fish out of next year. Schoe

There are some real good places along the dam that have easy access to fishing. They catch some real nice ones from there. Schoe

Fishing off the dam end is one of Stump Bumpers favorite spots to
settle into along the bank, lots of big cats in that area, all you got to do
is fling that chicken liver out about 20 to 30 ft an hang on to your pole
or have some dandy rod holders. Kirk
