Today we had quite a day down on Indian pass fishing for Whiting and perhaps a Shark.
Our crew consisted of Mack and Sam Sullivan from Back home in Ill., Don and Angie Minchew from Wewahitchka Fl., Stephen Buss from the UK and is a very well known guide in Spain who fishes for the exotic Wels Catfish, and Joyce and I.
We were catching a few decent Whiting, an occasional Red and a Bluefish when a young lady from Minnesota fishing next to us hooked up with something very large and It came our way so we all pulled our lines and gave her plenty of room. She was doing a great job working with the fish which we surmised was a big Sting Ray the way it hugged the bottom. But, she was only a few yards from beaching it when we saw a very large Jack Creval at least 25 to 30 Lbs. Several people in the crowd that had gathered saw a dark shadow come toward the fish and then surfaced and showed his top fin and a very large tail, a Bull Shark at least 6 to 7 ft. long had grabbed her fish and was headed for the Gulf. Everyone had a sad look on their face when her line went limp. The line looked and felt like someone had rubbed sand paper on it about 6 ft up probably from rubbing the side of the shark. The young lady will join the site when she gets home to her computer and give us her side of the story.
Well Stephen was fired up now so I rigged one of my larger rods with a wire leader and cut one of our fish in three pieces and hung the center chunk on the hook. Steve slung it out a good bit and placed it in one of our PVC rod holders and set the bite clicker.
No more than 15 minutes later it went off screaming the clicker and bouncing the rod. Stephen is still a young man and quickly had the pole out of the holder and set the hook and that one was headed straight for the Gulf and bang, there he went. He was really tickled to have a hold on one that big and is looking to our Shark trip on Mon. with another one of our new members, Jimy Stephens of Mexico Beach, that has graciously offered to take Stephen and myself.
