HEY BIG COUNTRY
Dont feel bad,we spent about 6 hrs on TARPON LAKE,saturday and didnt
catch anything, but we didnt fish a lot,we were exploring the lake, and
checking depth and cover,we went the total length of the lake, and out
thru the canal that comes in from TAMPA BAY,we turned around when
could read the highway signs on us19 pointing back toward the north,it was a learning day, most everybody we saw were in a group of about 30 or more
boats, trying to catch specks, from what i saw in touring around, they were
fishing in the wrong place.i spotted tons of them in places that no one
was fishing.

Well guys, I got real bored today so to keep myself occupied, I went to Home Depot, bought some 1/4 inch X 2foot X 25 feet roll of Hardware Cloth, some zip ties, some PVC Pipe and some of those long tube Floaties (the ones that kid's play with while swimming). Then I started making floating Bait Pens. I got one almost done so far. I'll finish it and start on another one tomorrow. These will be taken to the River this year at tournament time. The small one I will finish tomorrow will hold 2 dozen hand sized bream. The large one I'm gonna build will hold 4 dozen. These pens work great and if you plan on fishing the Flathead Tournaments this year, don't leave home with-out one. When I get them done, I'll post a few pics. P.S. These also work great at Turkey Creek or Dover to keep them Channel Cats or Crappie alive and well until it's time to leave....Ray

to,glad to see that someone apologized for the rudeness, and that you
got a straight awnser from someone that knew what he was talking about.
I would have been like BIG COUNTRY,They would have got an earful of

Sound's like those son of a guns that come once or twice a month and screw up the fishing by playing with those "toy" power boats. They went to the county a some years back and got premission to use up half the lake to race their model power boat's on the weekend. They just come right in and set up like they own the place and could care less about people who are trying to fish. I've had the same thing happen to me on several occassions there and I gotta say I've never met a bigger group of ***holes in my life....Ray

I tried again this past sunday at dover and guess who was there... yep they were out with their boats, so I didnt stay too long, may try medard on friday, just checked wunderground.com for the weather/wind report, looks like 3 to 5 mph winds and with my small jon boat that shouldnt be too bad :)
btw John, you said that maybe someone would loan me a trolling motor for the tourney, have an uncle that will let me if I get to fish it :D
Also had a job interview with home depot the other day, will have to see how that works out and go from there.

HEY ALAN
That would be a fun payback, watching the boats go crazy, back several
years ago, when they first started flying the radio control air planes,if we
could get on the right channel,on the cb radio,we could key the mike and
cause the operator to lose control, causing some big time crashes, and
some very pissed of owners.

01-21-2006, 02:18 PM
Big, I will see if I can get the wife to ride over that way in the next few days and fish a little, I can bring my boat and equipment. We want to check the area from New Port Richey to Brandon for a place we can possibly rent next winter. We are in a beach House this year and am not going to do this again. The first week my wife had to clean the whole kitchen. I mean dishes were cruddy as were the drawers and pots and pans. The belt on the vacuum was broken and we tried to buy one at the hardware store without any luck. We have complained to the rental agency two weeks ago and still no luck. You can Imagen what the carpet by the door looks like with all the sand around here. Oh yeah, there is 4 outside light fixtures that have no bulbs in them We have this one till Mar. first and then moving to a nicer one down at Indian Pass. Later Schoe

Hi Schoe, I went for a little while this morning, just as I pulled into the parking lot I noticed that my *service engine soon* light was on, stayed for an hour and couldnt quit worrying about my car, so I came home and now its in the shop  and while I was gone walmart called me for a job interview, so I have to be there at 2pm today (keep your fingers crossed :) I need a job)
so I'm not sure when I'll get back out to fish.

01-24-2006, 06:23 PM
Schoe, talk about Wally specials, as I was going into Hillsboro last week, I saw a sign that the local Kmart's had about a 50% sale. I checked out the sporting goods but they didn't have a lot. I did see this 10# tub of fish attractant. It is a block with a rope on it. There was no price so I had them check. They had some trouble so they called a manager back with a special scanner. The lady said how does 10 cents sound. I said good can I get a few more. Sure, take them all. When I pulled the rest off the shelf, they sold for $10 ea. I ended up with 5 tubs of the 10# and also 2 6# tubs of grainular attractant. Total cost w/tax 75 cents. The total should of been $75. That is uh....1000% off..lol When I checked the receipt, they rang up as some kind of lure on clearance. After submerging, the blocks are supposed to last up to 2 weeks w/no current. Don't know if they work but couldn't pass up the deal.

Wyndigo
01-24-2006, 10:48 PM
just so ya'll will understand why I've been looking for a part time job
I'm posting a picture of myself from august 19th 2003, the morning of my gastric bypass surgery and the start of a new life for myself.
At this point I weighed over 500 pounds, had arthritis in both knees, high blood pressure and was borderline diabetic and hadnt worked in quite sometime.
Oh yeah, add Depression to the mix, anyway, I had the surgery and within two months I was off the blood pressure & diabetic medication, now at two and a half years after surgery I weigh around 250 or so, can walk long as I need to and have started looking for work..Plus I can now sit in that lil jon boat
Last year I had some major difficulties from the bypass, including having my intestines twisting/being herniated and blowing a small hole out of my stomach then less than a month later they twisted again...wanna talk PAIN? then I had a blockage in the urinary system fixed, then a kidney stone that took a second try to get followed by three and a half months of vertigo, now I am better and getting back to losing weight, yep I wanna lose at least 30 more pounds and working will help that, so has going fishing.
Ok thats my story (most of it anyways) sorry for the book that I have written :) ya'll take care

Alan

p.s. I'll try to get an updated picture to add on here so everyone can see how I look now and Hope that its with a BIG ole catfish!

Hey Tyler, have you been catching any more of those tournament winning channel cats?

Schoe
01-25-2006, 07:45 AM
Wyndigo, I can personally feel for your problems you have been through. I myself, have been overweight for years and it has been an uphill battle to loose any weight.
My son and daughter both went through a similar procedure almost two years ago and it has turned both of their lives around. They have energy to run and have a desire to get up and do things that once was an effort.
I haven't had a cigarette for 8 years and let me tell you that wasn't easy till I had no choice but to quit when I was taken to a hosp. and hooked up to a machine for 8 1/2 months.
So congrats on doing what you had to do as I know that had to be a scary and a difficult decision for you to make and I hope you do well now as a result of what you have been through. Schoe

Wyndigo
01-25-2006, 10:50 AM
Thanks Schoe My dad smoked for years, even tried being hypnotised and that didnt work, so I'm glad that you have quit. I used smokeless tobacco for years and finally quit, bad thing is, once you are hooked you are always hooked, I still crave it at times, but I know that if I ever start again that I wont be able to stop, plus my girlfriend wouldnt kiss me ever again lol so no way I'm gonna start back.
I'm also happy to hear that your son & daughter had the surgery and are both doing fine now, I just wish that I could have met my surgeon years ago and had it done.

Take care

Also I must have missed it where you got the job at K-Mart for sure. Congrats are in order.

hi everyone, I got a call this morning, I start my orientation thursday morning at walmart :D I got the job! YAY! lol I know it may not sound like much of a job, but to me its the start of a new life (yet again, first time was after my weight loss surgery)

Schoe: its fairly easy to post the pics,if you need help let me know and I'll do what I can :) and I hope that you get well soon, my girlfriend has had that nasty mess for over a month now.

Capt. Kirk: get to feeling better Soon, so you can get back out to fishing :D

and I put it back for another time.

hey Ray once I get to working let me know if you need to buy some things, will go after work and use my discount :) gonna save me some money on premo bait lol Usually I go out to fish about 230 to 3 pm till dark, never did much good out there in the mornings, plus my girlfriend likes to keep me on the phone in the mornings  she's gonna have to quit that when I start work.

Rockinmichigan: I was very tempted to keep that big one and have some nice fried catfish, but something just said to let it go to fight another day (Hoping I'll catch it again lol) I just wish that I'd been able to get pics before releasing it, but its my sisters digital camera, one day I'll get my own :)

I know Big Country has fished the Tampa By-Pass Canel alot so he may be able to point out a few spots. On the weekends you may want to try Dead River Group Camp. It's at the end of Dead River Road that cuts off to the left, off Hwy 301 about a mile south of the entrance of the Hillsborough River State Park. Good luck....Ray

Wyndigo, I have a hard time releasing fish that are keeper size. Only time I'd throw back is if I caught just one that was a keeper size, or if it was over my limit. But an 8-10 pounder if that was the only one I'd have to make an exception for. I don't catch them that big. Typically the catfish and bullhead I catch are around anywhere from 1-3 pounds.

Wyndigo
01-31-2006, 05:42 PM
hey Rockinmichigan that was the biggest one I caught that day, all of the others were small, by small I mean 10 inches or so, not even big enough to grease a pan for lol
Most of what I catch that are keeping size are around what you get, 1 to 3 pounds and alot of times I will throw them back, just depends on how much I want some fish for dinner :)
Take care

Wyndigo, here in Michigan channel cats have to be at least 12" in order to keep them. If they're less then that, even if it was legal to keep them I'd throw them back since when they're 12-13" it can be a pain in the butt to clean 'em. You can clean them and get good fillets when they're a foot, but they're easier to clean when they're a little bigger, for me anyways. Well worth the time though, catfish are good eatin'.

rockinmichigan, I'll have to learn all the rules for fishing once I go back to michigan (when I get to fish) and need places that I can take my girlfriend
so it will have to be wheelchair accessable for her, I took her fishing during one of her visits here in florida to the skyway pier, it was her first fishing trip in 18 years and she had a blast, caught lots of fish and had dolphins begging for our baitfish :) that made her day.

as far as smaller catfish go, they are a pain to clean if too small and they are the ones that seem to fin me  alot quicker than a large one does

Take care

Wyndigo, if you have any questions about fishing in MI, like rules, etc., let me know and I'll see what I can do about helping you with any answers you'll need. I'm not sure about wheelchair accessibility up north, but I know a couple places in my neck of the woods in SE Michigan that would be very accessible for your girlfriend.

thanks Rockinmichigan, I need to know all I can so I can stay out of trouble with the DNR :D never been in any trouble with the law of any sort and dont wanna start.
I know that around alpena theres a few places where I can take her fishing
a few guys in that area told us about them, so I'll have to check that over and go from there and I know that it will be some time before we fish since I'll be headed up there right at winter time.
Thanks again and take care

Wyndigo, I'll get you some details on some of the state limits, sizes, etc. When you fish up here do you know what specifically you'll be targetting, like crappie, catfish, etc? Only reason I ask is because I don't want to overwhelm you with every little dirty rule that's up here.

Wyndigo
02-01-2006, 06:28 PM
Rockinmichigan, catfish mainly and anything else thats edible, long as I dont have to use a flyrod, never could do that  and like I said in the other post, need a place thats wheelchair accessable for my girlfriend (future wife) :D
by the way, I started another post called "it's whats for dinner" about the fish I caught today, will have a pic of them soon.
Ohh speaking of my girlfriend, she corrected me, I do know where Hillman is but I was thinking of another place, Fairview, where she lives is kinda in the middle of the two.
Thanks again for any info

I'll have to check out your other post, Wyndigo. There's some good bluegill waters up that way if you choose to use some of the little ones that are as long as your thumb for bait. I'm not sure how frequent the flatheads are up there, but around here you can find some 20-30+ pounders that will eat up bluegill like they were hotcakes.

Wyndigo

Here's some limits for you Wyndigo:
Yellow perch 50
Sunfishes-combination of 25 of black and white crappies, bluegill, green and hybrid sunfish, longear, pumpkinsed, redear, rock bass, and warmouth.
White bass-25
Those species listed above have no size limits and are open all year

Flathead cats-15"
Channel cats-12"
Both of those are open all year long

Northern pike-24" (daily limit on northerns is 2)
Muskie-42" (daily limit on muskie in Michigan is one per day)
You'll have to check which lake you'll be fishing at to make sure those two species are in season at that respective lake. If you're not sure, let me know and I'll help look for you.

Largemouth and smallmouth bass-14"
Both of those are catch and release right now as far as I know, no matter the size.

Walleye-15" except on Lake St. Clair and St. Clair River where its 13"
On Lower Peninsula inland lakes unless otherwise closed to fishing the season is last Saturday in April to March 15th.

When all in season, you can have a limit of 2 northern pikes, or a combination of five of the following species: walleye, smallmouth, largemouth, and northern pike.

Thanks Rockinmichigan, thats a good start on the info, also how much are the fishing license?
Take care & stay warm

Wyndigo

rockinmichigan
02-02-2006, 02:51 PM
A year round license is $14, that covers all species except trout and salmon. To get a year round pass plus a stamp for trout and salmon the total is $28. A day pass is $7. That's for residents. For out of state residents, a 24 hour pass is $7, a year round restricted pass is $34, and for all species is $42.

Wyndigo
02-02-2006, 06:43 PM
Thanks again Rockingmichigan, the price from the basic license is the same here in florida $14 I'll have to find out how long I have to live there before I can get the resident one, think its 6 months here, is there a web page with the info? that way I wont be driving you crazy with all these questions LOL
Thanks again though

Some older black lady was bream fishing on the other side of the lake directly across from me and one of her cane poles got yanked in. For 2 hours I watched this cane pole get dragged all over the lake until this guy was finally able to cast out and snag the line. He reeled it in and it had a 2 pound channel cat on it....LOL....The old lady had already gone home so I put the collapseable pole in my truck. If I see her over there tomorrow I'll give it to her. That guy let the channel cat go to fight another day. Anyway, that's my fish story for the day....Ray

This place is awesome. I used to have a friend in high school who lived on that road and we fished that park religiously. Great bream fishing and good catfish in some spots too. The biggest Gar I've ever seen and all most landed was in that stretch of the river.

I have fished Dover park a few times but that was years ago when it first opened. We never did much good. I guess it's really changed for the better.

Hello everyone, I ordered a gallon of Danny King Punch Bait about 3 weeks before the Catfish Rodeo at Medard Park hoping to get it before the tournament. Well it did not come in, I received it the Monday after the tournament. My wife and I went out on Sunday to Medard Park to try the bait and boy, it's great. We have used Premo blood bait, livers, squid, shrimp, dead shiners and cut bait and have never caught so many fish or fish that big, out of there before. On Sunday it was cold, windy and rainy and I caught 5 fish and my wife caught 12.
I would recommend that bait to everone for channel cats.
No doubt if we had the bait for the tournament we would have one or at least placed.

Hey BIG, I just got home from work a while ago, so I won't be able to make it today. A buddy of mine from work want's to go "shiner fishing for bass" on Friday at Dover so I'll be there by 6:30am to start catching up some shiners for a morning of fishing. I don't know if you have to work Friday but you along with Hushpuppy and Kirk are all welcome to join us. As you already know there are some monster largemouth bass at Dover because you're not allowed to keep them, so hopefully we will catch a few nice ones. Sorry I can't sound more excited about bass fishing but the bottom line for me is there are two types of fish.....Catfish and Bait....Ray

Hey everybody, me and Steve Collier went over to Dover Park yesterday and did some live shiner fishing for bass. We were able to catch some bass but also caught 3 real pretty channel cats on live shiners fished under cigar floats. The biggest would have weighed in at 6 or 7 pounds. Catching the bass was fun but bottom line, to me they are just flathead bait....LOL....Ray

They look like bull heads, but get larger, they are jet black shading to
dark gray on the belly,i caught one a couple of years ago that was
a hair over 14lb,i live on brackish water and i have no idea what they
are really called, once in a while we will get some that are black and
silver mixed color,up north that is what we called marble heads, all i can
tell you for sure, they are some of the best eating cats that ive ever had.

John, sounds good, I'll see you over there. I'm looking forward to meeting your brother-in-law also....Ray

Kirk, the water level at Turkey Creek is down a little but not really affected that much because it is fed by alot of underwater springs. You can bet that's where the bigguns are laid up right now....LOL....Ray

Just got a call from BIG COUNTRY who is over at Dover Park with his brother-in-law. They have three nice channel cats in the cooler and the bite is on! Dog-gone-it! I had to work overtime today so I missed the action. When BIG get's into them there ain't no telling what monster he might hook into before the nights over. Look's like his brother-in-law might want to go AGAIN real soon....Ray
