The bluegills are on the nests now on the lower Hennipin Canal, IL.
Two of these pictures are just nests and the other two have a dink fish or two working the nest area. Now these are just dinks but the big ones will be there at your local hot spot.
It's time to hit your favorite gillin spot. NOW !!! Mike

Are you sure you don't want to run by Ohio this weekend Giller? I sure could use some flathead bait. I think you might want to throw a couple extra jigs in there. Looks like you are packing a little light. :D

Well guys here's my report: So I get to school and talk to my friend Jeff that I was gonna go with today and he said he couldn't cuz he was going camping, so there goes that plan...asked a few others who I thought might want to....no go. So it turned into a solo trip. It was suppose to rain on and off all afternoon so I wasn't expecting much. I get to the little slough that I recently discovered to find that there were only 2 other older gentlemen there, which surprised me cuz this place is usually packed. I got out my rods and put a bobber and a small piece of nightcrawler on pole 1 and tied my "Lucky;)" spinnerbait on the other. Pitched the one with the bobber out and didn't get anything for about 15 minutes until I notice something playing with it. Go over and pick it up, start reeling in and up to the bank comes a NICE Bluegill...THEN all of a sudden...PLOP!!! Into the water he goes!! lol o well I would have released him anyway. Caught a few more smaller 'gills over the next half hour...then I started tossing my spinnerbait around some tree roots for a while. Maybe three casts into it, my spinner was about a foot away from the bank when...WHAM!!! Somethin' comes out of nowhere and smokes it!!!! I thought it was a big bass at first until I got it into my hand on the bank...there I figured out it was a Northern Pike!! I measured it quick since I had only caught one of them other than this one in my entire life, and that was in a lake in the Boundary Waters. It turned out to be 26 INCHES!!:D I know, I know, not huge but i don't get into many huge fish so this was pretty neat for me!! I got the hook out of his mouth and tossed him back in. I thought since there was one Pike there had to be more, so I tied on my Wiggle-Wobbler that I caught my Northern on in Minnesota. Sure enough after bring in about 10 more bluegills I tossed the spoon down the bank a ways and when it was getting closer to me...WHAM!!! Another Northern!!!! I brought this one in and it wasn't nearly as big as the other one but...still a Northern!! I had to call Jeff and tell him ALL about it:p I took some of you guys advice and tossed that bobber into some thick stuff and pulled 'gills out of it without getting snagged!!:D End of the day I caught and released 12 bluegills/sunfish and 2 northerns...sorry guys forgot the camera at home!!!

We picked a poor time for the south Iowa gills this time. Just couldn't find a place where the wife could bank fish out of the wind. We checked out a number of lakes including Belva Deer. The wind was ripping hard and just couldn't do anything in the rollers along shore.
We decided that with the price of fuel it didn't make any sense chasing around with cold predicted.
We got a few gills and a few smalish crappie, but nothing with size at all.
Did see something different at Belva Deer, There was a pair of fellas setting ON a bed of gills,(As in the center of the bed in the back of a cove) They were trying without luck to lip snag a gill that got up nerve enough to get on the nest beside the boat.
Now that's what I call up close fishing . lol Mike

Sorry to hear it wasn't that great for ya Mike. I kind of figured that the cold "breeze" would put a damper on fishing. Hopefully see you on the next trip.
