I couldn't believe I haven't been out fishing since I returned from Ky. Lake, but, that all changed this morning.
Early this week I had the good fortune of being invited along with IllinoisGiller to a private pond near Sheffield ILL. The weather man had tried to make us stay home with rain warnings and severe thunder storms for the area. But they have been lying to us the last three weeks with their forecasts so off we went this morning.
Leaving my place in Moline I headed for Gillers place a few miles away and found him and his equipment anxiously waiting in his driveway. It didn't take long to get his things piled in the Suburban and we were under way meeting up with our host and WIF member John McReynolds (Slingblade) out on the interstate and followed him to the super pond.
Arriving there about 8:00 AM we were surprised to find the boat plug missing in the boat that is there for guests usage. Ole whittler Giller took charge and made us a wooden plug out of a piece of Willow branch. We loaded our equipment and ourselves and began throwing small jigs tipped with a wax worm.
This is a beautiful lake about 3-4 acres with natural gravel and sand bars Ali around with some great fishy looking coves.
It didn't take long for all three of us to hook up with some of the nicest Bluegills and Shellcrackers I have seen in this part of the country. According to Giller these weren't Hybrids but true Bluegills.
After enjoying ourselves for an hour and a half the gloomy sky finally opened up with some sprinkles of rain which wasn't bad until the lightning bolts and thunder started with a fairly heavy downpour at which time we decided it was time to head for shore and the vehicles.
I had brought everything needed to have a shore lunch with my propane deep fryer, loaf of bread, butter, and a box of breading to coat the fish.
It didn't take long to decide to head for Johns house and proceed with the shore lunch in his garage. Arriving there Giller did his magic with his portable electric fillet knife while I started heating up the oil in my fryer. We rinsed out a mess of fillets and shook them in the breading bag and got started. By the time Mike finished filleting the last one I had run several batches through the cooker and soon had the last batch in as Mike washed up.
What a platter of fillets we had , I tell you they were fit for a king as you really couldn't get them any fresher. We all ate our fill and John had enough left overs for several trips to the fridge for snacking purposes.
Actually fishing less than two hours we caught close to 60 fish keeping 40 some of the bigger ones easily topping 1/2 Lb each that made for a great morning on the lake and a really good time with friends. Thank you fellas for a great morning.
