Pros Rank 'Shaky-Head Worm' No. 1

According to June issue of Field & Stream, the hottest lure on professional bass trails is the "shaky-head worm.''
The lure, which isn't used much by local anglers on Central Florida lakes, received 27 percent of the votes from a poll of 100 BASS and FLW Outdoors bass pros. Second, at 18 percent, was hopping, flipping or swimming a jig, also a secondary tactic on local lakes.
The Bagley Bait Co. in Winter Haven makes one of the most popular jigheads, the Bagley Shaky Head Jig.
The shaky-head worm is a combination of a finesse worm and a jig.
Pros typically rig finesse or trick worms with 1/8-ounce or 1/4-ounce jigheads. The technique is to cast and let it settle to the bottom, then slowly move the rod tip up and down while it remains in place.
It is effective because the lure remains in the strike zone longer when bass are not aggressive because of fishing pressure or weather conditions.
Top colors on Polk County lakes are junebug, watermelon red, red bug and black-and-blue combinations.
The next time you're on the lake looking for answers, give it a try. I plan to.
