I and my grandson Jonathon ,slipped up the local canal yesterday for a few gills.
The heavy weed cover had cleared the water a lot, but leaves available fishing water spots few and far between.
We found open water below a dam w/ 4' of crystal clear water. Normal jig and slip float set up just would not work .:confused0024:
We both had fairly long rods so I set them up with the float 5' up from the jig with the shot right under it. This left the tiny jig on a 4' free line, with the float as an indicator. Casting up at the base of the water where it falls over the lock, we were able to get 45 gills. They certainly weren't monsters, but nice for that section of the canal.
It turned out to be a fun couple hours in the light rain.:icon_razz: Mike

45 gills in a couple of hours aint bad.Down here we would settle for

Yesterday I went to a local strip mine to check out some 8# Power Pro red braid. The line was working well, but was getting a lot of short strikes on my Grizzly Jigs.
Thinking the bug bite just wasn't working today, I tied on a #10 salmon egg hook, tipped it with two wax worms and put a heavy shot 3' to 4' up the line. The shot let me get it down fast and the extra length to the hook allowed for a slow gentel fall. These fairly large gills just hammered this set up.
I wouldn't want to try to cast a set up like this, but from the tube or boat it works well. 50 nice gills can't be all wrong:icon_cool:. lol

Great tip Mike
Shows the importance of adapting to the day and the water and not giving up cuz your "normal" methods might not be working
Good idea never to get locked into a specific "style" of fishing because sometimes just little changes in presentation or baits will make a huge difference
