Yesterday, I was taking my wife over to Appalatchacola for breakfast when we were just getting into town we heard and felt a loud vibration so I pulled into a gas station to see what was happening. My rear passenger tire was as flat as it could be. I went inside and asked the clerk if there was any place in town to get a tire fixed and changed and she said nowhere on the weekend that she knew of. So back outside I went to start changing the tire.

A gentleman came walking up to me and looked the situation over and said that he worked at the tire shop in town and would fix mine if I could wait until he was done filling the tanks at the station. So I went inside and purchased a can of Fix a Flat and put that in and had to ease across the street to get air at another station as the place I was at had there air hose stolen.
The fellow had told me where the shop was and go there and wait for him before the air all leaked out again. We hadn't been there when his big tanker truck came pulling in the lot. He pulled the tire off and we looked at the damage and it looked like a large brass washer was embedded itself in the tread. I thought that tire was shot, but, when he pulled it out it turned out to be a key with the small end stuck in the tire which he quickly put a plug in and it was fixed.
When I asked what I owed him he said nothing and I was shocked. Where I live it would have been at minimum been $30.00 to $40.00. Seeing he wasn't going to accept anything I stuck a $20.00 bill in his shirt pocket and told him how much I really appreciated what he did and to take his wife to lunch. Also I gave him a WIF hat and a hand shake. Schoe

From my expirence it seems to me that people down south are more friendly, maybe these cold winters make people up north more bitter.

Well guys I was in a very sad frame of mind when the lady at the station said there was no where around to get a tire fixed and changed. It was raining when I went back outside to evaluate the problem when that good fellow walked up to me. And the rest is history.
If it would have happened two blocks away or 10 minutes later out on the long bridge between Appalatch and East point I would have been in a mess. Schoe

That happened to me a couple of times down south and Schoe your right, it's all about timming!

A few years back I was traveling north of Rockford on the interstate and blew a left front that sent me all over the road - when I stopped and got out a state highway truck pulled up behind me and the driver told me he didn't think I was going to save it! They told me to get in my car and they would change the tire - when done I tried to pay them but they said they couldn't take anything because they were on duty - I got their names and wrote a letter to the state highway dept. about the friendly help and mentioned their names - got a letter back from them thanking me for doing that because it added 4 hrs to their vacation pay - looks like we both won!

It's good to hear that some people still have a heart, and know how to use it.

Bobcat,
I agree with you totally on this. I have really tried to live by this all my life, although there have been times when it just didn't fit. But, life has been good to me so I like to help others when I can. Schoe

Schoe, we call good fellows like the tire man a "good o'boy" in my neck of the woods. It's sad, but true...there aren't many people who would help you change a tire or even care that you were out in the rain while doing it.

Screen, we have the highway trucks that come around and provide a bit of gas, help you get your doors open when you lock your keys in the car, and change tires in TN. They're a blessing in snow and ice!

Here's to the good ones...
