BIG WORD I KNOW

how do your reel

zebco and most same type reels i reel in with it over top of pole handle right side reel right handed

same with baitcasters

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

open face or spinning (hope that right) reel on bottom crank with left hand left side.

when reeling baitcasters where i gotta pop or walk the dog i can only do facing the right and "popping" toward the right side. Seems that i can get better action and smoothness then what I can the left (nearly impossible for me)

lots of people do it that way, main reason is they didnt used ta make many left handed baitcasters....makes more sense fer a right handed person to cast with the right an reel with the left instead of switchin hands every cast lol....on the walkin the dog....its all in the pauses tween twitchin,an the proper amount of slack......ya gotta practice more, nutherwards means fish more lol

Hey, Ho Shi, how's things?

It isn't against the law to switch hands after a cast with a certain type of equipment. It's also not illegal to keep the rod in the casting hand. It's totally up to you. Fishing is supposed to be fun, so you should use the retrieve method you feel is right for you. What are you more comfortable with? Go with that. And if somebody makes the claim that you're retrieving with "the wrong hand" or have the reel handle on "the wrong side," tell them Sonny says they're nuts.

Personally, I've trained myself to be ambidextrous with retrieving, simply because of reaction time for the bite when fishing two (or more) rods. If you're deadsticking a rod and reel with the handle on one side, and throwing lures with a second rod that has the handle on the same side, and get a bite on that deadstick, you'll have to switch hands or put down the rod you're handling before setting the hook, and you'll probably miss the bite. When you have the deadstick's handle on one side and the lure throwing rod's handle on the other, all you have to do is reach down and set the hook right away on the deadstick, and you've got that fish. Set the lure rod down, and bring in your fish. Your reaction time is infinitely quicker this way. I've even brought in two fish at one time with the handles to the two reels on opposite sides!

But if ambidexterity isn't for you, don't worry about it. Fish the way that's comfortable for you. Fishing is supposed to be fun. If it's fun for you to cast and retrieve with the same hand, 'nuff said. If it's more fun for you to switch hands after a cast, go for it.

As far as what reels to get, the new Zebco 33, 33T... in fact, many modern Zebco models, which are now made in the Pacific rim... are able to switch the handle from right to left and back again. And as Gofish points out, there are left-handed baitcasters out there if you want to try baitcasting while leaving the rod in the casting hand.

So, it's not really important whether or not you're using the "proper" retrieval method when you fish. The important thing is that you're using one. Get out there and use the method you like! Go out and have fun, and enjoy all that the Creator has given us.

Tight lines and slimy landing nets, Ho Shi.

I always switch my spinning reels handle to the right hand. I have to switch hands to cast, but it feels more natural.

i reel always w/ the left and cast w/ the right. but it does cause problems w/ baitcasters not as many options there. but it is what feels natural to me
