Jason, Without a finder for locating general depth, I'd start on the weed edges. I like to use smaller baits. Popeye type jigs in the smallest you can find tipped w/ wax worm. This time of year I trim the feathers or hair down near the hook for a smaller presentation.
Lately I have been leaning towards #10 salmon egg hooks tipped with 1 or 2 wax worms. These things look way too small but work well on even the larger gills. Just keep the hemostadts handy for deep hooked ones.
For open water lakes without much weed or brush cover I would start at the edges and work my way out deeper with free falling tiny jigs on the lightest mono you have.
Just a year ago I would have told you that fishing for gills with 2# mono would be insane. Now it is a go to for me when there is little enough stuff for the gills to wrap in. Most times I use #8 fireline or Power Pro
Hope you get a mess , Mike

I don't think the chilly am will make any difference with the steady weather we are having. Pressure is a bit higher than I like, but they should still hit. Mike

I went to bro-in-laws pond this am and just put on a chunk of crawler on a #2 hook, caught a few bait fish, i don't think they were quite big enough for eating size yet. but there's plenty of little guys there. next time i go for bait i'm going to have ta put on a smaller hook to get the little guys. the ones i'm looking for are 1-3 inch for bait. i think maybe next year the gills in his pond will be eating size. along with the cats. the bass are getting big also i would say about 12'' long. I didn't get to see any cats but he feeds them real well.
