Clinton Lake in Illinois

OK Boys and Girls, how would some of you like to attend a day of fishing at Clinton Lake south east of Bloomington Illinois on Sat. the 29th of this month.

I'm thinking of pulling the boat down on Fri. P.M. with the Motor Home. I'm told this is not only a good Catfish lake but holds some great Walleyes and Stripers.

Please post if you are interested as I think a few will be there regardless. Schoe

Clinton Lake
There's good news for Clinton Lake in Dewitt County, a 5,000-acre cooling reservoir serving the Clinton Power Plant.
Walleyes are at their highest concentration since 1997, and nearly half of those electro-shocked were over the legal limit of 14 inches, said DNR.
Officials stopped stocking the lake with largemouth bass in 1998 as part of a study to determine how well they spawn there. Two years ago, the bass answered that question by having "great" survival of young-of-the-year fish, Garthaus said.
Perhaps that result was due to the transplanting of aquatic plants carried out by DNR, he said. Weeds give young fish a place to hide from bigger fish that want to eat them.
More good news: Fishermen are beginning to catch smallmouth bass, which DNR began to substitute for largemouth.
Striped bass up to 30 inches are "coming on strong" at Clinton, too, and their smaller cousin, the white bass, had the highest catch rate ever in a survey.
Channel catfish are excellent. Flathead catfish are good.

I'm not possitive how far it is from town but the lake is listed as 2 miles from town so I don't think the campground would be more than 2 to 5 miles. But , don't hold me to that .

Thanks Ray, I appreciate you posting the link to the Motel there in Clinton.

I just got off the phone with them at the Motel there in Clinton and there isn't a room to be had anywhere in that area because of the Pork and Apple Festival that is taking place that weekend there in Clinton. And more than likely the campgrounds will be heavily populated.

So, I would suggest we do it the weekend of Oct. 6th and 7th. What do you think?

Soupy, take I-24 out of Paducah into IL. Go to I-57 N to Salem. Go west on Rte 50 nine miles to Rte 51. Go north on Rte 51 past Pana (Great bait shop on the edge of town PM For details). AROUND Decatur on the 51 Bypass to Clinton. Driving time around 4 1/2 hrs from Paducah. I took this way home the last time I was at KY Lake and it's a decent drive. When you get into Clinton take Rt 10 east to the lake, unless Schoe is setting up on the North side, then you want to take IL 54 east out of Clinton. If you have any questions PM me, I'll give you my Cell phone number.

These are some good directions but, the only thing bad about it is, Paducah,KY is 65 miles south of me...I'm between Evansville,Ind (52 miles North) and Paducah,KY on the Ohio River... I'll hit Ill 13 just across the Ohio River at the Shawneetown,Ill Bridge and go up 142 to 45 then over to 51.

I think you are looking at the hot water discharge for the Nuke plant Soupy. The spillway goes to the Salt River that goes into the Sagamon River. The spillway is on the west end of the lake, and you will drive past it on the way to the campground.

Did anyone check to make sure the campground isn't closed yet due to waterfowl season???

I just talked to the park office at Clinton Lake and was assured there wouldn't be a problem finding a good camp site for the Motor Home close to the water. Yes we are allowed to leave the boats in the water along the shore line.

I plan on being there sometime Fri. afternoon.

Like I said before I am bringing 500 Night Crawlers along for our members use so bring an appropriate container for them.

Friday Sept 28th 2007:
Spent the day cleanin' and re-linin' my poles.. Decided to take "light-tackle" to Clinton....Leavin' my big stuff behind....(I hope this is not a mistake)..I'll probably have 10 to 15 rods with me....2 for the wife and the rest for me.
Put new 15 lb test on wife's poles and 30 lb on my "light" stuff.
Will have my 50 lb "light tackle" ready just in case "gofish" does find a catfish and not just them "Tad-poles" I've been hearin' about.( Leavin' my 80 lb stuff for the Ohio River...) Also too: bringin' those "Fancy" sinkers that gofish told me to try......(hope this is not another mistake).
Gofish: I'm not bringin' any bait with me,'cause you said there was plenty up there.....I do want you guys to understand one thing......WE ARE COMIN' TO FISH ! ( and to eat,visit and have fun) I even think my ole woman is gonna BBQ some deer to bring with her...
Will be leavin' out Friday mornin' in the AM and hope to find the place before dark thirty.
Gotta git out today to wash and wax the Yacht and get her ready....

im back.......caught a few largemouth an smallmouth.....1 short walleye in the boat an lost another nice one bout 4lbs right at the boat,tryin ta git the net ready......no whites or stripers.....but lots of channels up ta 5lbs or so..driftin fer the most part but found a school of em stayin put in a cut offshore an anchored fer a spell.catchin em on both rods at the same time driftin lol....ended up with 23 channels outta couple spots an only fished fer em a couple hours....real steady action.all on cut shad....ya can net bait right at mascoutin boat ramp or anywhere else jus bout...heres a few pics....hopefully the water temp drops some this week.still way too warm fer stripers an eyes even at the other end by the intake fer the plant its still 76

Gofish tells me the name of the camp is Mascoutin...If you're in Clinton go east on 10 look for 14 ..turn North on 14 and go across the lake... Look to your left. ...Least , that's the way I'll be comin'.

Kirk, I would highly suggest doing it on-line. Illinois license if a PDF file that you can save, and reprint if you lose the first one. Not sure about KY's though.

Well, I've come to far to back out now.....
Told everybody that I was comin',got rooms lined up, got maps printed out, Mrs. got BBQ deer cooked up, even bought me some of them fancy walkin' sinkers that gofish was tellin' me about, reckon all that's left to do is go gas up the truck, the boat and get them loaded up.....
Still ain't figured why I'm drivin' 300 miles to catch TAD-POLES ??????

Mrs. even bought me some "NEW BIBS" too !

Great to see everyone--------even Soupy,had a good time had the
best biscuits an gravy from Chef Schoe that i ever had,the only thing
that was bad was the weather 94 degrees,when we started putting this
plan together to go there we figured on some fall temps,old mother nature

As it has been noted, the fishing was not the best, but the chance to visit with those that could make it was the highlight. The weather and water were both on the HOT side. lol
Mrs. soupy's barbeque deer was just plain great! :icon_cool::icon_cool: Thanks soupy for popping that deer for her to work her magic on. :icon_razz::icon_razz: Schoe's buscuits and gravy were great too. ( Mama soupy gets top billing though because I ate her's first.) lol
Gofish (Joe) done his level best to put us on fish, but some of us just weren't to good at taking his good advise.:confused0024::confused0024: We did get on some decent pre poached white bass on Sun. on a couple Meps spinners that Joe loaned us:party0011: Thanks everyone for being there. yep ya gotta luv tecknoligy. I guess i better fess up, I got skunked. and the best part is i had the misses catchin fish that i couldn't, but thanks gotta go to Joe for the tackle. burrowed and given freely.

I couldn't catch a fish if my life depended on it. Joe showed us "the misses and I" where the fish were at but i couldn't get one in the boat bass or cats. not for lack of tryin though.

The best part about the weekend was getting togather with good friends and food. The BBQ deer was delish. and then we had the chef schoe cooking the fish and the best darn biskits and gravey i've had in a while. and bless her heart bankfishergal "loraine" gillers wife fixed us up some deserts some great cookies and a peach cobbler, doggone shame we didn't have icecream to go ontop. I know the misses and I had a great time even though the fishing wasn't the greatist.

Joe thanks again for the bass fishing rod, total suprise to me hope to get it out on the miss up by the dam soon.

I'm glad everyone made it home OK from Clinton Lake.

It sure was an enjoyable and relaxing weekend for me and I hope it was the same for the others that attended.

The fishing for Cats was totally different than what I am acustomed to here in our river system. There is a deffinate difference in Lake fishing and River fishing.

Our member and as I would call him our "expert common sense fisherman managed to find a good number of Cats and steered the rest of us to the numbers of White Bass we managed to catch.

Now Soupy did catch the biggest Cat of the weekend and deserves a pat on the back and Kenny's wife Duanne caught her share of White Bass. Hopefully she will share some with Kenny for their next fish dinner

I do want to extend a thank you to all that attended and I am looking forward to the next Get Together.
