this heres fer schoe an kenny (since i taught him how an not where an why )
driftin lakes works year round but there are a couple key times ta remember.the first is in the spring when water temps warm up an then again in the late summer early fall.the biggest factor in figurin out when its better than anchorin is FOOD!.....in the spring look fer when the baitfish start showin up on the surface reall good an surface water temps in the upper 60s to very low 70s.in the early am.tends ta be the start of good prespawn cat movements also.look fer large flats in mid depth range (10 ta 15 ft deep)preferablly with deep water access nearby.bonus points if ya can locate a cut or 2 goin in to the flat.it provides a funnel or migration route from deep water.another pattern in spring/an fall both is deep edge driftin like i do in ky lake its really specific though cause most times the fish are jus comin outta the winter spots an lethargic.everythings gotta be perfect in the presentation ta catch them.in this you want a deeper flat with bait on it close to the main lake basin or river/creek channel.
late summer/fall drifting is a easier proposition if theyres shad.just look fer schools of shad on the surface,or schools of fish feedin on the surface.youll still have to search ta find the depth most of the fish are holdin at.the more structure as far as up an down in the fall the flat has the better because itll concentrate baitfish.....as the season goes on an water temps drop the driftin bite becomes more of an afternoon thing. also at that time start lookin in large coves in the afternoon. theres normally a progression from the mouth of these towards the shallower water in the backs as the day goes on.
structure is the key ta driftin.im talkin bottom structure an not wood or weeds.scattered woods not a bad thing though lol. fish will concentrate at the base or tops of drops, or on bottom content changes. cats at the miss were relating heavily to the rock bottom an not the sand:evilgrin0039:.....ill be postin the how later tonight includin how to power drift.lol
