View Full Version : Lure Making

I've been stuck inside lately and doing no fishing - so I decided I'd try to kill some time MacGyver-ing my own inline spinners. Unfortunately, while I do have the wire and some hooks, I don't have the blades, bodies, or beads (yet). So in the meantime, I fashioned my first inline spinner out of a Bud Light bottle cap and some split shot weights. Sure, this sucker will probably sink right away being that it's made from weights, but that's really not the point - I really just wanted to practice bending the wire into the right shape.

From the looks of it, it seems like most members use live (or once live) bait, but has anybody else tried to make their own lures, and do they have any advice? I'm primarily looking for advice on a good wire former (I bent this one by hand with needle nose pliers) and where to find fair pricing on the "bits & pieces" that go into this, like blades, beads, and hooks.

Thanks to all in advance!

Looks like a good lure to me. I know me and a couple million others would chase after a nice bud light. :icon_biggrin:

I enjoy making different kinds of rigs for live bait fishing
There is a site that offers nothing but components for lure making, everything from basic beads and spinner blades to wire an wire forms

They also offer a free catalog you can get for the asking :icon_biggrin:

Will pm you site link and the catalog link as well

As for that beer cap
There was a bunch showed up couple years ago in some of the little stores around here
They were bent double over wire with the split shot inside to use as weight
and for rattling
More like a flutter bait or a wounded minnow bait, one treble off the back

I sent one to a friend of mine an he said that he caught bass an skips with
it, I never tried them, but in stained water something that thumps or vibrates can trigger hits for sure

Wanted to thank all of the folks who PM'd me after my initial post. Got a lot of good feedback and advice. Ditched the beer cap and started bending some wire with some more "legit" components. Just thought I'd share.
