I and my son got away for a day on the ice. We went to a strip mine lake near Victoria that I was fortunate to gain access to.:icon_cool: There was a brisk wind but a sunny day. The bite was TOUGH. No, It was tougher than that.:confused0068: lol We got a couple smaller ones on regular ice jigs tipped with a lil chunk of wax worm. The water was running 14' to 17' deep. I finally tried a 1/80 hair jig I tie and put a couple on the ice. Now my son was real interested in what I was using. He tied one on a finally started bringing up a few. It was tough, nuckle down, pay attention time. I have never worked so hard for a few fish, but we both had a ball doing it. :party0011: The ice there now looks like a honeycomb, and I can guarentee we didn't hurt the population any. There were lot of them we just couldn't get to take anything, I got a couple small bass that I worked for a half hour before they finally gave up and hit. :confused0024: Hope you all got a chance to get out for a bit today. Mike

Fishing with your son can't be beat.
I see you are taking to the concept of no meat when it get's really tough.
I'm glad to see this. Most guys would have gave up,but you did work up some fish.
Each fish is a new ball game.Don't flock shoot, pick 1 fish and work it.
Nice job Mike!!!!

How right you are Keith! Pick a single fish and work it right.:icon_cool: That coupled with the use of hair jigs is a system that works in most cases. I'm slowly weaning off the wax worms. Not sure I would need them at all for crappie, but smashed a 1/4 chunk into the hair of a couple jigs to get there interest stired a bit. I also took the time to inspect the jig action just under the surface . On a couple, I thought the profile was just a bit large. Just a bit of "tweaking" with my little sissors would perfect it and bring positive results--without meat!! Thanks for all your help Keith, I'm slowly catching on. lol Mike

I know it's tough to teach on "ole dog" new tricks, but you got to much fishin hoar in your blood to keep ya away from a good thing when it comes to rearin!:confused0068:Did I say that.
You can help others in your area.
Take em out and give them a whippin ,then share the how too's eh!
The whippin get's there attention, then you can get to teachin!:party0045:
What a way to get rid of your junk jigs, cut em down and give em away.

Keith, You are right on about the whuppin then teachin. Only took a couple fish on the ice to convince my son that it's time to start paying attention. lol He switched to the hair jig then started is own whuppin. lol
Kenny, Hope I can find the time to get away from the shop long enough to slip out to that pond and put you on some gills. The vex will find them, then we'll feed them some tastey jigs. lol Mike
