Went out this weekend for the first time. Borrowed all the gear from a guy at work. I am hooked. Went at lunch and bought a rod, lures and a few other things. Cant wait to get back out there this weekend. Did I mention that i only caught 1 fish. Doesnt matter. I LOVE IT. http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Glad you were able to get out and give it a try as many anglers sit in the house and wait for the ice to go away...I love open water fishing and taking the boat out but I find that I do more fishing in the winter just because it is much easier to do and less things to bring along...:evilgrin0039:

Great news there Kermit.:party0011: You are in a neat area to start with.:icon_cool:.
Sure wish I was closer.
It really doesn't take much gear to get started.:confused0024:
Is the ice pretty god dow that way yet? Mike

Kermit, I gave up ice fishing a lot of years ago after not having a lot of success at catching many fish.
But, due to not having the knowledge and or the right mentors I gave up, until I met Giller and some other devoted ice fishermen.
I have re-stocked my rods and other equipment needed and am having fun even if I am not getting those five gallon buckets full of fish.
I am fortunate to have been around some knowledgeable people that know what they are doing and have shared with me what I needed to know to catch some fish and loving every minute of it. Schoe

I'd love to try it, but not knowing the first thing about it doesn't help. As always, it's good to hear that a new experiance was enjoyed Kermit.

Giller I drilled about 12" on the pond that i was on and many locals said everything was about that thick.
Rainman, I didnt have anything either. I was lucky enough to have a guy at work let me borrow an auger and i made my own pole from an ultra light that was busted. I say give it ask around. Somebody has an auger you can use and any pole will work to get you hooled. I bought a pole today at a local store for $11.00 and $6.00 for the line.
Thanks again to all on this site. I have been able to figure out so much on my own just because of the tips and tricks read about on this site.

Kermit....OOOOOOOOOOHRA!!!!!!
If there's anything you want to know ,make an ask out of yourself.Mom always told me that.I'm a big ask...er!
Seriously, whatever I can do to help you out ,just say the word.
Ice fishing is a blast. Not all days are 50 fish in 60 minutes ,but there are those days sitting over a school of suspended crappies.
Gills are a blast too.Bunch of diggers they are.
Late ice will get real good.
Hone up your skills in the tough time so when they bite better you'll be a well oiled meat machine.

Congrats on you first slip on the ice!
The way the weather has been arround here and thin ice Joe's suggestions are good and sound.
My sister just bought a home on Turtle Lake in Marcell Mn. but I won't be able to go up for ice fishing till next year because they don't take possesion until March.
Hope this cold snap helps the ice.
