View Full Version : It's a Challenge...Honest!
Do you want to put some fun and add a challenge to your fishing this season? Try chasing carp with the Scooby Doo rod. This is not just for kids...honest. It tests your ability to be patient, be quick on the reflexes (before the rod ends up in the water) and puts the fun back in fishing.
Holding 80 yards of 6 pound test monofilament the Scooby Doo rod is more adapted for bluegills and sunfish than it is for carp. A carp in the mid teens can take 80 yards of line off the spool in about 10 seconds, so as much pressure as can be safely allotted needs to be applied to slow down what seems to be a runaway freight train with this light equipment. Even the smaller carp will test your skill on this equipment. So, if you want a change of pace and to add some more fun in your carp fishing I challenge you to try your luck with the Scooby Doo rod. What to use for bait-Why Scooby snacks of course. (Actually sweetcorn is a good bait to start with). Have fun and let us know how you do. Here is a picture of one that I caught on the Scooby Doo rod.

As crazy as it sounds I bet it is a blast. Thanks for sharing. Might just have to give it a try with the kids sponge bob pole this year.

Sounds like a lot of fun and definitely a challenge. Would have initially thought the "quality" of the rod to be the main issue, didn't even think that the spool capacity would present an even bigger issue.
I remember there was an article in Field & Stream a few years ago where the author took his daughter's Barbie pole either Bass or Saltwater fishing. If I can find the article online, I'll post it.

That would be a major challenge :confused0056:
First time I took my grandkid JJ fishing we had Scooby Doo pole and that thing was like
a wet noodle when it came to trying to get a decent hook set, can't really sweep the
rod, would bout have to do it with the reel and then quick flick of the wrist
Sharp hooks a must, might have to break out that old scooby rod again
this spring an see what it will do
waht bout a ultra light pole?? would that still qualify?? lol i got 6 or 8 lb on mine
That would do for a start. The idea of the exercise as it were is to increase your abilities by pushing yourself and your equipment to a limit that you thought you could never acheive and above all have fun doing it. This gives you a new respect for the youngsters who are suppose to use these types of rods to actually catch fish. Good luck to all who try. Let us all know how you do on this endeavor.

PS Here is a picture of a KOI that I was fortunate enough to catch 3 times. Once on an ultralight spinning rod and twice on the fly rod in a 4 year period.
Here is the same fish after capturing it with the fly rod for the first time. The first picture was after the release from catching it on the ultralight. Remember to have fun!

THe one I got isn't scooby doo, (had to go out to the garage and check it out) it is a
"Sponge Bob Squarepants" fishing rod, and I could not get a hook set on the thing when
we went gill fishing first time
Was like a limber wet spaghetti noodle, no backbone at all
Will break it out again this year see if I can do anything with it, (nothing else might end up sending Old Spongebob back to the deep end of the lake )

Tim if you use a bolt rig with a heavyer sinker and a hair rig you won't need to set the hook the sinker will do it for you.
