I hope this isn't a repeat thread.

Mine would be an Abu 6500 model for channels.

As of the present, I use only spinning reels. So far the cats I catch are well within the limits of the spinning reels I have.:confused0024: Mike

A Master deep sea reel I won in a contest is my favorite (clicker is broken) and it is mounted on a 12' cat ugley.

Mike, you better go with Schoe for some flatties so you need a bigger reel! LOL

ho_shi, let me know how those Hawg Seekers work for you, the wife wants one ("cause it makes noise when I have a bite...."), to go on a 7' glowstick ("so I can cast it" she says).

like i said the one downfall i notice so far is that they have to be kinda pointed where u cast to in order to effectively work right

watch the sales, i bought mine at walmrt at basspro internet sales price will try to get out this weekend and try them out, been busy with my trot line

My Shakespeare Alphas have always been reliable for me. But Okuma has a new "baitfeeder" spinning reel Ive been considering.

I pretty much like any baitcaster that looks like a small winch with clothes line spooled on it. :icon_biggrin:

Seriously though I like the Abu big games in the 9000 model. Also taking a liking to the Penn's. Sure hard to beat them for yankin the big uns out of the structure.

not sure any of my stuff is big enuff to fish w/ u guys. i just use my 6 n half foot hvy action bass pro rods and baitcasting reels spooled 20# mono. for flats and med/hvy 6 - 6 1/2 rods w/ shimano reels spooled w/ 10 -12 # cajun red. which by the way i do not care for as i have found it not to have much abr. resistance. holds a knot and casts well but freys easy.

You're right, Ho Shi. The American-made Zebco 888 was a great catfishing reel. If it had come with a bait alarm, it would've been perfect. Built to last, too. I still see them all the time on eBay.

There was one reel bigger than the trip-8: the American-made Zebco Brute. An 888 took in 100 yards of 20 lb. line. The Brute could swallow 100 yards of 25 lb.-test, and (believe it or not) was a little bigger around. Either one makes a fine cat chaser. Set one on an Ugly Stik, like you did, and the catfish don't have a chance!

For smaller cats, I'd have to say a Zebco Legacy 1L or Zebco One Classic on a medium-action 6'-7' Ugly Stik would do the deed.

For baitcasting, I'd probably go with the Penn Levelmatic 940 or the old reliable Penn No. 9. For smaller cats, the Levelmatic 920. Make the rods for these reels "Ugly," too.
