Are you sure he wasn't just trying to swim out of your hand???
Maybe a spinal deformity due to an injury as a little fish.

was definetly a deformity, I couldnt move it at all!!was very stiff!!!!

somebody probly tried ta eat him at some point lol.......see bass an panfish like that here at times....think its herons doin it

ive seen alot of channels in a pay lake like that that i used to go to. also in local lakes nice to see someone took a pic. i always wanted to but never had a camera when i cought one . zim-cat

well glad i am not the only one to catch them..but ya know i thought it was boat props did it. the heron theory makes good sense tho

Let's not forget muskies and big northerns, guys. Heck, even a flathead (yellow) catfish could've done wicked damage like that, too. Those flatheads don't fool around.

Spinal deformity. Sometimes they make it to near adult or even adult size even with a crippling deformity like that. Seen another deformity thats pretty common in cats and carp that makes the head look like they have downs syndrome or something. Weird stuff.
