I and my wife Loraine slipped out to chase a few gills Saturday. The weather was a welcome change from the cold spring we've been having. We stopped by a small Monmouth, Illinois city lake, The wind was blowing pretty god so I targeted a protected cove where the water runs 6' or so. I had on a 1/80 oz. chartruse/white hair jig tied on a red #10 hook. I was fishing about 3' under a heavily weighted Carlisle 783 float.I like to keep the float deep in the water, lessning the resistance but allowing for a long cast where necessary.
The bite was slow, but when they did hit it they pulled it under quickly. After a half hr. or so the bite faded off quickly.
We finally decided to pour the fish back and take a run down to Gladstone,IL. and try the gin clear lake there.
After trying a couple areas protected from the wind without success, we moved up to a narrow cove. We picked up a couple in 6' of water. I made a long cast and picked one up in the tip of the cove in about 2' of water and it was game on. The wife got a Red Ear up in the shallows also.We also got a few small bass of course.
We only kept enough fish for a meal, but it was sure neat to get out in the beautifull weather for a change :icon_cool::icon_cool:.
The water just isn't warm enough for the gills to really turn on here yet. They should be ready to go while I'm gone to Kentucky lol .
