took a buddy to lake vermillion today fer crappie and bass...kind of a "guided" trip lol..he had a hard time locating fish in other than jus a few spots so i took him around and showed him a bunch of my better ones.30 plus mph gusts and 20 to 30 mph sustained winds made the day interesting lol.
the day started off pretty slow for crappie,water temp has jumped up a few more degrees from last weekend.(65 at 18" down this morn) first 2 spots didnt pan out so headed for some early spawning areas to see if theyd started in and they had.not in great numbers yet but they will be soon.we were using 9 to 14 ft crappie rods with 2 inch tubes in blue/white and silver/white....my buddy caught most of them because of the wind situation.i kept the rear of the boat positioned on the spots and bass fished most of the day.
bass are starting to spawn also.caught quite a few bucks just starting to make nests and some nice females close by...biggest went just a lil over 5lbs but had 9 keepers and 5 were over 3lbs...for the bass we were using jig n pigs in black /blue...flippin tubes in purple.....bandit 100,and 200 series. the cranks i used the same color just changed series for depth purposes..i was crawling them thru heavy timber/laydowns just fast enough to keep them wobbling and bump the bottom..actually all but one keeper came on the cranks
ended up with a double limit of crappie from 9 1/2 to 12 inches.most my buddy had ever seen in a boat at once he said lol.he had a blast and thats all that mattered ta me....goin river runnin tommorrow!
