Well with the economy the way its going, everyone is looking for ways to save a $$.. Although ive heard its looked on as the "cheap" species, a pole, line, hook, and a worm... catfishing can get just as expensive as any other species out there in my opinion.
I often fish with nightcrawlers from the bank out at our campground, I have a 8yr old brother and a 4yr old son, they love to fish, and they like to catch fish, Cats, Blugills. bass.ect..
thats why I use a lot of worms...even the worm prices are going up for a doz..Untill last coupple yrs, id always just toss out my few worms I had left and throw the container away!!
well now I save all my unused worms and often send the kids out worm huntin like I did when I was little..like today out there at the river, was doing some yard work at our trailer, My son and I found 2 dozen decent worms...Frabill has some awsome storage containers that I love and use.. one is the large habitat, I put about 2-3 inches of the worm bedding down ( its easier to dig for them when they bury themselves) Just keep it cool and moist, i leave mine in the basement. next I use the double sided container for my trips, usually fill it up with bedding or dirt( wet and moist) this thing is perfect for when they dig down to the bottom just flip it over and there on top...
anything simple and homemade could work just as well...If you use a lot of worms throughout the yr, youd be suprised how much you would save by doing this, and its a lot of fun out there diggn in the dirt again like old times..lol...Good luck, Have fun!!!

Just don't put it on top of your plastic lure boxes when storin in the winter time, kinda melts things down. and could possibly burn down ur garage.

I gave up on diggin for worms a long time ago,lol...figured out its easier to just wait for a damp night and go out in the yard with a flashlight and pick up as many worms as you want, they are usually layin everywhere and ya can catch them 2, 3, or even 4 at a time if your real good:evilgrin0039:

5 gal bucket , a bunch of wet leaves and an old refrig. Works about the same...We just went out the other night and picked up several of them big ole night crawlers.. Been usin' the 5 gal. bucket for years ... as long as you keep 'em cool and fed.
Did have a big deep freeze on the front porch to raise them worms in ... But, Maw says it just didn't look right out there and made me git rid of it.

The first and biggest worm bedding and food Mfg. was Buss Bedding of Lanark IL.
They cooked earth and old newspaper to make it. They sold out a few years back and it is under another name like Magic or something.

When storing summer worms for a long outing, sink a jar in the bedding for adding ice to when needed. Puts the cool where needed. Mike

When I go out on a rainy night to collect crawlers, I always choose a sidewalk or a remote area of a parking lot that's right near grass. A sidewalk with grass on both sides is best. They'll be all over that concrete, and they can't escape when you pick them up like they can in grass. And they'll be out in the open as long as it rains (or until the birds wake up and discover they've got a buffet).

I stored them in styrofoam containers, like Fishaholic, but put them in an old fridge, like Soupy. I had smaller containers to tote them to the fishing spots, and set those smaller boxes in one of those hard-sided "6-pack" coolers with a couple chunks of frozen Blue Ice. I've found that the Blue Ice stays colder a lot longer than just water, and those little devils have to stay cool, or they start to croak. Setting the 6-pack cooler opened in that old fridge the night before helps, too, so it's cool to start with.

Yeah, that Buss Bedding was great stuff, Screen, but the Magic's good, too. Another thing you might want to do is mix in some old coffee grounds (the caffeinated kind, not the decaf) into the top layer of the bedding just before you go to the fishing hole. That makes them livelier. At the end of the day, put the smaller container back in the old fridge. Whatever you do, don't put it in your main fridge... especially if your Significant Other doesn't like to fish. We wouldn't want to freak out "She Who Must Be Obeyed," now, do we fellas?

Tight lines, everybody.

I would like to congratulate Sonny for answering more post in the middle of the night then I have seen in a long time.

It goes to show that there are so many baits, lures etc... that not one method can be thought of and that is why the woman in our lives always think the garage needs cleaning but that smell is just our bait waiting for another fishing trip. LOL
