View Full Version : Two beautiful fish
Here are two fish that I caught this weekend by freelining bread. The one is a Koi (orange) and the other is a fantail koi/common carp hybrid. Thought you might like to see them.

Very interesting catch. Like the others asked, let us know where you caught 'em. The more and more you post, the more and more interested I get in carp.

I had to check your profile for location. Were these exotics caught from public waters. That fantail looks strange on an otherwise common carp. I haven't heard of any of those in these parts.-------yet I di hear of an occasional goldfish caught though. Mike

Thank you for your interest in carp. These two particular fish were caught from a series of ponds (3 in a row) located on the edge of an industrial park in the city of Lancaster, Pa. It is open to public fishing. It contains bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie, brown bullhead catfish, koi (which is a japanese ornamental carp), common carp, mirror carp, and some of the most beautiful hybrids I've seen anywhere. I believe they are the product of so many fish in the ponds.
Most guys in the ponds fish for the bass and bluegills, which is okay by me because I enjoy the diversity of the different spieces of carp in these ponds.
Troutrageous,-By your screen name I am assuming that you fish for trout. Some of the trout streams here in the Mount Joy area hold a healthy population of carp and even some koi. I believe that some people get koi to have in their backyard ponds, then when the fish become too much for the owner to take care of they put them in the trout stream(s). They are tough to catch because they have had everything thrown at them but the kitchen sink. But if you are fortunate enough to catch one then you really have a sense of accomplishment. Besides when the water gets too warm to hold the trout, the carp are still there and you have the whole stream to yourself. This is a good time to explore new areas of the stream. Carp are fun on a fly rod too!
Hope this helps everyone to give some ideas and thank you all for the interest in carp fishing. If there is anything that I could help anyone with feel free to ask. If I can't answer the question, we'll learn together. Tight lines everyone!

Thanks for the additional info. Yes, trout is my game, but I do fish for other species like smallies too. That's what I usually turn to when the weather gets warmer, but maybe this year carp???

I ain't one of them Biologist....or nuttin' just an old fisherman ( and not much good at that lately)... But, I have seen something like these here fish in waterin' troughs around horse farms here in Kentucky....Seems that the farmers take their grandkids or kids to the county fairs and they end up winnin' these here "gold" fish like critters in them ping-pong ball throwin' at the fish bowl games.... And they takes these fish home and after the kids gets tired of takin' care of them fish they end up in the waterin' troughs for the horses... I've seen 'em as big as some big ole carp I catch in the Ohio River around here.... Seems ... these fish keep the water clean for the horses....
