Caught this in the BWCA of MN last fall, or did it catch me? Bait is a stringer of smallies. Didn't bother to bring it into the canoe though.

That looks to be a big ole snapper. Would have been good eating but doubt I would mess with it up there either.:confused0068: Those things just love a captive audience.:confused0024:lol Mike

That is a BIG turtle!
Always a big of a shock to see a head like that come out of the water at you

Well Todd, it may have been a chore but there was some fine eating there. However, a canoe isn't a great place for a 20 to 30 Lb. Snapper to be running around in mad at the fellow that put him there.

You probably did the right thing as I'm not sure non-residence fishermen are allowed to take turtles in Minn.

We will be having a video soon on how to clean a Snapping Turtle so keep your eyes peeled just in case you happen upon another one.

Thanks for the info and photo. Schoe

We've had some huge snappers try and raid our fish baskets which they're hanging off the side of the boat before.
They're usually big, nasty, mean and stink to high heaven.......but they do taste good if they're cooked right.:winking0071:

haha, that's a big one!

I love snapping turtles.. not to eat. I like them as pets. nothing more prehistoric looking on the planet IMHO, and they have a suprisingly interesting personality if you get to know them.

biggest one I ever caught was in the Petomic River, Maryland. I saw it sleeping in the mud along the bank, so I grabbed it's tail and plucked it out. It weighed over 40 pounds, but I threw it back before getting an exact number. bunch of people saw it and tried to physically take it from me so they could eat it... actually almost ended in a pretty nasty brawl.
