Had a great day on the lake today. Caught a nice redear on the first cast.... caught "my limit" pretty fast, stopped fishing long enought to get them filleted and put on ice, and decided to continue fishing, practicing catch and release.
Penetrated about 75 yards of solid water willow to reach an opening that I knew exsisted in the middle of them. Water in the fairly large opening was from 6 inches deep to about 2 foot in places.
i caught so many nice male bluegills, that by 12:30 I was just flat tired of catching fish, so I gave it up and headed for the barn.
That whole area must have been one big blue gill spawning area. I don't care where you cast to in the opening, it was a fish on almost as soon as it hit the water. I really don't think the gills were feeding at all. I think that they were just keeping their nest tidyed up. they would pick the bait up and take off, felt like you were tied onto a freight train, and then all of a sudden they would just drop it. (thank goodness for plastic unbreakable sun glasses, three times when they dropped it, there was so much pressure on the line at the time, the jig came flying back at me and hit the sunglasses).
For all you "full moon believers" that feel it triggers the spawn, well, get ready. I don't know what its like in your neck of the woods, but there is definitely at least one big spawn comming up within the next few days here on Okmulgee Lake in Ok. But I have had my fun with that group of Gills, I will not be intruding into their spawning area again this spring.
