A few comments on this site about how we Brits and Europeans fish for Pike has prompted me to post a brief reply on our many methods.

1) Bait Fishing. Pretty well 85% of all Pike fishing in Europe is done with either fresh or frozen fish baits. Either coarse or sea baits dead-baits are fished either static (legered or freelined) or under a float with coarse fish live-baits either freelined or float fished. Float fishing baits either up in the water or over depth.
The British and Irish during the International fish coarse or sea dead-baits on the wobble or sink and draw style. This entitles mounting the bait head first on two sets of trebles with a slight bend to the fish and then retrieving the bait with a series of twitches and fluttering glides to fool the pike into thinking that this is an wounded or dying fish, and therefore an easy meal. Perhaps the most exciting and productive method of catching pike there is.

2) Lures. Unlike the States, pike anglers in Europe do not fish lures as often as you do, though they are still catching on more and more as anglers get to grips with the many types available. For many decades pike anglers have used spoons and spinners to great effect and Colorado spoons and Mepps type spinners still play a huge part. These days however the use of spinnerbaits and rubber shad have come to the fore, with a small percentage of European pike anglers using and catching withjerk-baits. Miro-Jerkbaits have also found their place in tackle boxes, with the ability to use with standard pike and heavier spin rods.

3) Flies. A method that has only taken off here in the last 10 years, with a growing number of devotees catching some fantastic pike from dedicated Trout Fly Fishing lakes and reservoirs.

4) General Tackle. For a rough idea of the sort of gear that we use have a look at these sites listed below. You'll see lots of U.S. lures as well as Scandinavian as well as gear you don't see on your side of the Atlantic. www.fozxint.com (http://www.fozxint.com)

mike i checked out some of those sites and its just not right! theyve got different colors and sizes than i can get here.gotta figure out the exchange rate and shipping.lol the only live or dead bait fishing ive done for pike has been thru the ice.used to fish for them all the time when i lived in wisconsin with lures.still catch a few at ice out around here but dont target them as much as the stripers and musky. i do 99% artificial lure fishing . do you do much of that? im always looking for different lures to try if youve got any favorites let me know.

Most of my pike fishing is done using fish baits, but I do also use lures. It also amazes me that we get different colours and sizes of the same lure either side of the Atlantic. Could this be due to market trends or to the differing styles of fishing between us and also to the types of rods and equipment used?
European lures that I never fail to carry in my tackle bag are:
(1) Sandra Shad in White, redhead and Pearl. These rubber shad are made in France by Delalandre and have a curly tail with a strong vibrating action that drives pike wild. Loads of different sizes from 2" to a whopping 12". Fished with a jig head and with a steady retrieve or sink and draw retrieve.
(2) De Novo multi blade spinners. These also have an incredible action and are a must have lure. Best in 3 and 4 blade sizes, copper or nickel. Have a look at the British Pike Squad links page for a link to their site. www.british-pike-squad.co.uk (http://www.british-pike-squad.co.uk)
(3) Fox Shads in 4 and 5" sizes in every pattern for Perch, Pike and Zander. We don't have Black Bass over here, but our Perch are similar and our Zander are almost the same as your Walleye. No Muskies either!
(4) Fox Micro Jerks in loads of different types and colours for almost every occasion.
(5) Last but not least a simple copper Colorado spoon. Either plain or tipped with Red wool.

Let me have your home address and I'll send you some British Pike and Predator magazines which feature loads of articles on bait fishing and on the different types of lures that we use.
