In this thread I will be sharing my fishing report's and picture's for this year's Spring.
Let's start out with the trip from this afternoon. We went to the usual spot at the lake which is Eaton Ferry Bridge on Lake Gaston, NC. Well it was awesome weather, in the 60's and no wind which is a change....usually the wind on that lake is pretty bad. Well we had fresh Hickory Shad that we had caught in the river. We cut them into big chunk's and cut some into fillet's. We ended up hooking and getting a lot of bite's but only ended up with one fish which my dad caught and that was a 5lb Blue Cat. I had one that felt like a nice one that got me hung up while I was reeling him in. It's cool though, I'm sure I will catch my fair share of fish this Spring just as I did last year.http://www.********.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif
The first picture is my dad's blue cat from today, and the second two are from the river where we were fishing earlier for Channel cat's and Striper's.
Enjoy the picture's! Many more to come!

Zakk, yes neat color on the pictures. They have the look of Terry Redlin's work, the outdoor artist.
Don't beat those Florida fellas too bad when you get down there. I tell you they are a great bunch of guys and you will have a good time with them. Please take pictures and share them with us. Good luck, Schoe

Hey Zaak, those are some nice pics. I have had the pleasure of fishin' Gaston a couple times. My cousin used to live on the lake. I skunked him several times up tere. Tore em' up down around the overpass.(I-95). Caught one of the biggest specks (crappie) of my life on a 7" red shad worm. Good memories.

Wow man that's cool that you fished Gaston. I believe the overpass you're talking about is the one that I was fishing at and fish at quite often.
Also, a site you may like to take a look at is www.fishlakegaston.com (http://www.fishlakegaston.com)
even if you don't fish there anymore you might like to check out some of the fish everyone is catching there now, there was recently a report on the Crappie there I believe.

Went to the river yesterday up to a dam that we usually catch a lot of nice Stripers and catfish at, but all we could get was a little bit of bait! Don't know what was wrong, took some pictures anyway though.

zak has there been much current so far this year?
Katmaster Jr.
05-02-2006, 10:22 PM
Nope man, and I think that's most of the problem. With not suffiecent current the Striper's have a hard time making it up river to do thier spring spawning run.

I went to the lake yesterday, fished about 2 hours, storms ran us out of there a little early. We fished with chunks of Gizzard Shad on the bottom, got some great runs, and one hook up, but landed nothing. The fish I did hook felt real big though, hard to tell for sure, but I'd say at least a 30 pound Blue. Always sucks to lose a big fish like that.
Took a few pictures anyway to show y'all. A pretty day on the lake until the Severe Thunderstorms came.

My dad and I took my little 4 yr old sister, Ciera, out on the river in the new boat today. We trolled and cast with Rattletrap, and crawdad rebel, lures. We wanted to get a bunch of Bream and Perch to use for the Blue Cats tonight. Well we didn't catch a lot of them, but we did get about 5 or 6, but the thrill was my little sister catching a citation Bream that weighed exactly 1 pound and 1 ounce. She was just so happy about it, it was really awesome to watch her reel it in, she was laughing, and screaming about it. My dad also got probably about a 2-3lb Pike, which was pretty cool. I got a few Bream too, now I'm ready to go to the lake tonight for the big Blues!
Here are a few pictures, Take a kid fishing!

Some great pics.ZAKK,
Wish I had more of them of my family while the kids were growing up.Just seemed too much to carry the SLR camera and attachments out while hunting and fishing. Wish they had digital cameras back them.Pictures are only developed in my mind now.It is really a sad thing.
Take care of those photos so you have a record of the best times you spent with family.Later on you will find that they are priceless.
Thumbs up to you.

Thank you all for the nice comments, there is certainly something special about seeing here or any other kid catch a nice fish, the look they get on their face is priceless. My dad started me out that way and now look at me...LOL
Kirk, we didn't get the holders on yet because we need to buy the right size Bolts and stuff and the stores were closed. So we're going to put them on by next weekend. Today, I just put my pole in the clamps of the trolling motor and it was really exactly like a pole holder.
Here's the report of fishing for the day-
We took our new boat out for the first time today, we ran later then expected though. Got to the lake about 4am, but it took a long time to catch enough bait to go fishing, there was a lot of guys in our normal bait hole. But we did end up getting a good amount of Threadfin shad, and a few big Gizzards too. We put in at the boat ramp near Pea Hill Creek, well we didn't get too far away from the boat ramp when my dad found some nice fish holding off of a point with some nice structure. I threw out about 2 poles, and my dad threw out about 5 or 6. It took a while before I got a bite, but man when he hit.....he hit HARD! Had my pole with a large piece of Gizzard Shad sitting in the holder, clicker adjusted real tight....all the sudden the pole doubled over and line started ripping off my reel, this thing was moving. Then I set the hook and I swear I had to loosen up my drag because this thing was still moving towards the middle of the lake, I got a good fight out of him, then I finally moved him slowly, but he started rolling like crazy....and then.....I felt the legendary slack all of the sudden followed by not having the fish anymore...... This fish was big, I promise you that! I think we are going to try some different hooks, these ain't cutting it!
So then we waited in the same spot where I had the fish for a while, well once the sun had been up for about 30 minutes the dang Ski Boats, Jet Ski's, etc. Got so bad that we could no longer fish in that spot, well we tried a lot of other places on the main lake with the same kind of structure, got a few hits but nothing like the first place. The boats got worse and worse though, litteraly there were probably about 500 Boats in that area of the lake, mostly skier's that didn't give a care about anyone else, coming as close to you as they could when there was a huge wide open lake and we were just over to the side.
Last spot we hit was Gaston Dam, a couple hits, but nothing much. So we drifted for a little around Gaston Dam, something hit my dads pole with little shad, stole the bait. Well it had got too rough by then out there, so many boats there was a constant wake. We decided to finish up by trolling rattletraps around the bank in Jimmies Creek, my dad lost a White Perch at the boat, and I had one hit.
Then we went in, and waited in line for a while to get our boat out, gamewarden checked us, everything was fine of course. It ended up being a rather rough trip because we ran late and because of the holiday there were more morons then usual on the lake. We found a couple new spots though, we are going to try them at night sometime.
Good luck and tight lines to all!
Here is a picture I took from the first spot where I hooked the fish.

Yes, it is definitely a great feeling to be on the lake with my dad in the early morning, waiting for the big blue to hit, and watching the sun come up. There's just something about it that nobody can understand that hasn't done it before. Many people ask us "Why do y'all like to fish so much?" and of course a reply for this question would last for days.;)
My dad and I want to one day have a guide service together on the lake, maybe it will happen.
Thanks taking the time to read my reports, I really enjoy sharing my reports and hearing what everyone has to say about them.

We went out today, weren't really expecting to catch much in the daytime of course. Fished a long time though, was rough out there, and a ton of pleasure boaters that were very incosiderent and ran very close to us. My dad had to work tonight though and the storms were bad in the morning so we just went when we could. Found some new spots, some 5ft flat sort of structure located at the mouth of...I think, stonehouse creek, it's marked by bouys. I think it is probably awesome at night....we will find out.
We drifted a while around the channel, nothing though, then we anchored up in a few different spots, didn't get a lot of bites, but my dad did get a 5lb Channel Cat, at least we didn't get skunked.
We're going out again for sure tommorow, hopefully early morning, but it depends on my dads work shedule. If we don't get there in early morning we will hit the evening time bite.
I get out of school Thursday....summer nights are callin' my name!
Here's the picture of my dads Channel-

zak that sounds like a good spot.run the edge of the dropoff and look for structure and a point on that bar.i drop bouys to mark the edge and fish the base of the drop in the day and do well. if you can find it the wood will be the key

Yeah, we plan on throwing out bobbers on the 5 ft part, and throwing bottom rigs on the drop off, which goes to 32 ft deep. We will do some more searching with the depthfinder out there when we have more time. I agree with you.....
