Am considering getting a modern crappie rod for this spring. Dont know a thing about them but assume i'd be putting an ultralight reel, 4lb test, on a rod similar to a fly rod. Thinking about an 8' B&M ultimate rod. Glad to hear what you have to say. Thanks.

Sounds like you are definitely on the right track on that rod, but really depends on what you are wanting to do that the areas you will be fishing
I prefer something around 6 to 6 1/2, which matches up well with what I do
Acadia makes a couple of very nice ultra light spinning reels you might want to take a look at, one of our members took a proto-type out an beat the dickens out of it
Sounds like they match up to the rest of Acadia's line up quality wise, might be something to check out to match to a rod
Mike should weigh in here too, he has great deal of experience with longer
rods

I have both long & short rods, I mostly use a 6'0 ultralight shimano rod ultafast action. It has performed beyond my expectations, I also have a 12'0 rod only use it when I need to reach over something or not when casting especially in a boat with another person. My dad uses a 8'0 St Croix that he swears by but I like to stick with my 6'0 it's good for all around fishing. Hope this helps.

Rod choice doesn't take long to narrow down to personal choice. There are a slew of good rods available on the market now. The high number of real nice rods available now has driven the weight down and the quality up. I have so many rods it is easy to fall in and out of love with a particular brand or model.
My wife's "go to" rods are a Outlaw 11' 6" two piece. and a custom I had built for her. I really think she humors me by using the custom and still enjoys the Outlaw.
I used a Bass Pro Micro Lite 8' 6" from the old Burgandy color series for years. I'm starting to feel the effects of sitting in the float tube for 10 to 12 hrs. fishing long rods.
I just bought a 5' 6" to try from the tube this summer.
B&M has developed a good reputation, and I have a few up to and including a 16' 3 piece. lol
Your fishing style will make a ton of difference in what rod would be proper. I would suggest keeping the choice versatile .Get one that will serve more than one purpose.
Not all agree, but I use Power Pro Hi Vis 8 lb. most all the time. I have some Super Silver Thread 4lb for clutter free open water when I am playing, but I want the strength of super line for everyday use and it will turn out to be the cheapest in the long run.
WOW! Sorry for the long reply, I got to rambling. Both typing fingers wore out .lol
Another rod came to mind.Slightly heavier than B&M, Shakespear makes a Slab Seeker in 8' that is decent quality. A pair of them caught over 1500 bluegill in Wisconsin a couple, three, years ago.lol ole giller
I don't know if this will help, but I use a 9 foot Big Water Ugly Stick.
Line wt. is 11/12, with an ultalite reel and 6-8 pound test.
I fish the backwaters of the Mississippi River in brushpiles out of a boat.
The pole costs $60 at Fishusa.com.
The reason I use the stiffer pole is that you can control a fighting crappie in thick brush. I've used lighter poles and it was always harder to pull them fish out of the brush because they could go wherever they please.
A stiffer pole helps you lift the fish sraight up out of the brush.
Good luck figuring out which pole will work best for you.

b&m seems like an awesome rod company
i was thinking about a st. croix 7'6" ul rod just for the hay of it. but i won't drop the money until i know its worht it. probably would go with a bps wally marshall light though....but would rather have a cork handle.

I ve been using 5' quantums but only fished for blue gill. I use 6lbs test and heavier if I can get away with it only because I always end up catching bass. Caught one of my biggest bass on 4lb test. Hit about 3 feet from shore and had to flip him out with my hand.

I bought a walley marshall rod from bass pro last year with the cork handle and i love it...only problem is im use to using the tip of the rod to get my snags out and i figured out quick you cant do that with them!! im lucky the exchanged it no questions asked. The rod is awesome though with enough back bone to pull a 34" northern out of a brush pile no problem. its very light too and you can feel everything with it since its made from IM8 graphite

I just use a 10' Zebco with an underspin reel and 4lb test. It is in 3 pieces, so that's up to you on your needs and preferences.

Thanks for all the comments i didn't know about the variety or vesatility they'd have. Learned a bunch from the comments. Don't have a clue yet what i'll buy but like the idea of having one strong enough to pull bass, cats & pike from a crappie hole.

I have been looking for a long rod for doing that sort of thing, and bought a used fly rod for 5$ last year. I am thinking about putting a small spinning reel on it to play with (as I don't fly fish) and to reach into areas of cover that would be hard to cast into.

I have a couple of the telescoping aluminum rods, they go 10 and 12 foot
they are outstanding for just reaching in an popping fish out of some tough spots
and they have mounts for small reels on them as well
