When I got up this morning I had a new door for the shed that needs installed, new wood screen door for the shop that needs primered and painted, and the yard needs mowing.
That all slipped to the side when the wife said she was going to Iowa City to take a friend of ours gill fishing, and I should go along. Knowing she would be using gas in the van, I certianly wouldn't add to the severe shortage by mowing yard .;)
McBride is known for smallish gills and far,far too many of them. We started thinning them at 10:30 am . The girls were bank fishing and I had the float tube. I found the best ones holding in the shallows on the point of some manmade islands . Worm or waxies under a float was for the most part ignored. The answer came as before with a free falling 1/80 oz. Grizzly "waterflea",tipped with 2 wax worms. It wasn't too long till I had a basket full, the wife had a nice mess, and her friend had 4. That poor girl just can't seem to catch fish. We went to the cleaning station and spent an hour+ filleting. Her friend had to leave and took the bags of fillets home as we had planned.
That would normally end a nice day for us, but I had heard of this small Iowa State lake a short drive from there. We arrived there about 4:00. I got a nice mess working the edges over rock on the dam, and the wife got a few nice ones from bank, I decided to try the upper end so we loaded up and drove there. I had a hard time finding them up there. I was about to give up so headed back where the wife had set up on bank, She was already on them and had a nice mess. I started working the edges there and together we just plain hammered them. There were a few big Red Ear in the mix. We finally quit at 8:15. Now this is the long version of a very productive long days fishing. :D You can have the rest of the weekends fishing, Too many people out there now for me. Mike
