Started out going to Luna Pier, MI Monday night (Memorial Day night) at about 11:30PM. Figured with all the heat the biting will be better then it was
the previous few mornings. Turns out it wasn't bad at all. Ended up catching 9 fish, five channel catsand four white bass. Two of the channels were about a pound and a half (one was 13" and the other about 14 1/2"), two were about five pounds, and another about 4". Man they were fighting HARD too, just kept pulling and pulling, all but the 4" took line out whether I was willing to give some up or not. On the second big five pounder, I caught him on my medium heavy action rod with 15# test line, and as I was trying to net him up myself (the peir is about 8' higher then the rocks/water level) the line snapped, and as crazy as it sounds I might a wild swing to try and get a peice of him I ended up getting the sinker and getting that tangled up in the net, so I was luckily able to pull him up. The other amazing thing about it is that it went right by my other line without tangling, you wouldn't believe how close it
was. While I was trying to collect my bearings and getting ready to grab the pliers to get the hook out, another big hit on the other pole. Another big ol' catfish, unfortunately I didn't get it close to actually seeing it because it snapped my 10# test. Judging from the fighting from the other cats, had to be another 4 or 5 pound channel cat. Another couple guys that had fished about 4 hours caught four more channels about three pounds, a good sized sheephead from what they told me, and another couple people had caught another channel cat with some size.
I left around 6AM to head to Bolles Harbor in Monroe, MI, but by this
time it was in the mid 70s, and the sun coming up made it even warmer.
Very humid the whole last few days, really hampered Tuesday's biting
at Bolles. I did catch a small bluegill, and another guy that was
there that I know from where I work caught a 16" sheephead. He had
been there since 2:30AM and had caught another sheephead and four
channel catfish before I arrived. I eventually left around 11AM,
figured if I wasn't gonna catch much fish there I was at least going
to catch a tan.

Kirk, I wish I had video of that swing for you. One of those things where you wouldn't believe me unless you saw it. I'm really considering going up to at least 20-25 pound test line. I'd say 10-15 pound like I have on those two rods can do the trick, but it would be nice to have a little more assurance.

that is why i have to many reels there is one ready for any type fishing
that i think i will run into and at times i still end up wishing i had brought
something different, just to hard to keep 19 r&r in the boat.you know the
story cat rods bass rods and on an on,probably we could all get by with
6 if we took the time to study what do we really need,my main problem
is if i find some great thing that i must have,i buy the wife one also, then
i dont have to hear,HEY you got better equipment than i do,what ever
happened to the days when we were glad to have just one??? KIRK

For the most part I have the same thing going on, Kirk. I try and have at least one for every occasion. I have a total of 9 poles I could toss out at any given time, though I have 6 in regular use now. Three have to be re-rigged, and two need new line on it. I'm going to have to go with some heavy line on at least one of them and use that for catfishing. Some people think I'm nuts for saying this, but where I nightfish I swear the fish fight harder there then in the river.

Gotta love that night fishin, thats my favorite time, maybe they are being
more aggressive when feeding at night, your not nuts, there some strange
things happen at night, when i hear the Great Fish Bird the bite is on,if
the bird is quiet, its going to be a long night.some people would call that
nuts,crazy,or worse.KIRK

I prefer night fishing over most any other time of day. Morning fishing is fun, right when the sun is coming up and the few hours after that. Night fishing seems to bring out the hungry fish, and in some cases more fish, and a lot of times bigger fish. But on the other side of the coin, there are times you get skunked. Seems as though its either quite a bit of fish, or nothing at all.
