always if possible bring a fishing buddy or at least let someone know exactly where you will be fishing if your in a boat and going out leave a list of all your grid spots that you will be fishing at. and always have a first aid kit and cell phone/radio and always set up a time to be home even tho you might be a little late or early. i watch the news and constantly i see reports of fisherman all over florida and southern georgia getting into mishaps and always lacking something and almost always either ending up dead or nearly dead. i always try to bring someone with me encase of problems and if i cant find someone i carry a cell phone and i always let some one know exactly where i will be. it is very important if you actually break down all the things that might happen while out fishing. snake bites, gator bites, insect bites, slip and fall, be tugging on a fish line breaks sinker flies back and knocks you in the eye or in the head, fall through the ice, boat wreck, lightning, accidentally cut yourself deep while cutting bait, and many more things may happen. i know most of these wont happen or there is a slim chance that they will ever happen but it happens a lot more than most people think and usually many of these things happen due to over confidence, ignorance or carelessness. i usually carry 2 tackle boxes with me some times 3. tackle box 1 basic tackle needed whether it be fresh or salt water. tackle box 2 always has no tackle in it but has first aid kit, razorblades, fresh water, ace bandage, flares, air horn, whistle, a cobra 2 way radio with scan channel option and nova station on it, flash light with a few settings including sos, batteries and a thermal blanket. 3rd tackle box fly fishing items. I always carry my #2 tackle box with me i know it seems like alot of stuff but i can tell you it saved me on more than one occasion.

i was on a friends boat 3 july 2006 and he had just made fun of me for my second tackle box that morning when his boat broke down in the gulf just before dark and then his boat lights wouldnt come one and we were drifting away from shore. it got cold quick and dark quicker i used my 2 way radio to scan for radio frequencies that were being used i picked up several but they were to far out for my little radio to send on but i could hear the other radio users and while listening and using a map we figured out where the closest boat was to us and also realized that the might see the flare so we sent it up and heard that boat over the radio they did see it and were heading toward us we tried to use the air horn to signal but wasnt working so we used the flash light and whistle to allow the boat to narrow in on us. the thermal blanket helped us stay warm enough to use our hands to work the radio flash light and other items. my friend garry now keeps his own 2nd tackle box around.
