Now I can rant and rave all I want ...I can even tell you all about my live well I'm building in the shed up on the hill... I'm gonna keep all my "CREEK CHUBS" in it 'til I need them to fish... I just got one question... How ya keep that thingy that sucks the water out of the tank from suckin' all them little fish up in it... Done found 'bout 4 in it, this morning .. Almost burnt up my pump...
Anyhow , I got me one of them waterin' troughs from a farmer down the road, he's got a pond up there, he won't need it anymore.. And I got me one of them Aerator Pump things that pump your water around that tank but, it keeps suckin' all my fish up in it...Guess I need to fix that.. Well, I'll have to finish this story later.. Momma Soupy is hollerin' for me to go to Wally- World with her..

One more thing afore I go... Thanks for my own little corner guys.. When they told me they were gonna start me one of them threads, the first thing I thought of was that they were gonna call it: Other Species (http://www.whereifish.com/thepond/forumdisplay.php?f=33) ! Later guys.

ain't it amazin that someone can make "suckin a minner up through your aerator pump" sound so interestin that you are rooting fer him to hurry up and get home from wally world to see what happens next.......:D

(you might make a strainer out of screen wire Soupy. That is if that little piece of ingenuity has made it back in the hills where you live yet, after all it has only been around for a hundred years or so ) - did I type that out loud??? :p

Tee, do you think if he cuts a piece of screen for his fish tank, that he
will remember to put a piece of duct tape over the hole,in the back door??

soupy,
i would go to home depot and get a piece of 1/8 share wire mesh screening that should do the trick if you place that around your intake hose...

Soupy_1us
06-17-2006, 07:55 PM
"home depot"!!!!!!.. You guys don't really realize who you're talking too... I am really back woods !... It's 75 miles to the nearest HOME DEPOT ! It's 10 miles the nearest lumber yard and I'd bet they wouldn't have that screen...have to order it.... It would be easier for me to just the little booger die and go get s'more minners . The screen door idea might just work though...if I can find that fix-all tape.....I will probably tie a rag over it (water intake) for now. ...And yeah ....he was dead by the time I got him out. But, don't worry....I got me a ice box to keep him in. We don't let nuttin' go to waste....I'm going to get me a RC Cola and a Moon Pie ...I'll be back later

06-17-2006, 08:36 PM
Well, it's not looking good for my minners.. Poor things aren't farein' well.. I think it might have something to do with the Aerator pump.. I might not should've use that 1 horse powered pump....Guess I can use them for chum now....didn't know them critters had so much guts in them...They are already wrapped in the rag I put over the in-take hole.. I guess I better wait 'til tomorrow to finish this little chore..Gettin' dark and Momma Soupy's got beans on.

soupy if ya got a old cricket tube (wire one) cut one end out and thatll work otherwise your gonna want to make a tube out of screen wire and balin wire.with that big a pump ya need a bigger screen. guessin ya figured that one out already though.lol do pop minnows work if theyve already been popped?

That's the best Ideer I've heard all nite.. And I got one of them things...Don't use no Crickets no how. Gonna fix that tomorrow....After I get the chum outta my pump...... Popped? I don't think I ever heard of them, unlessin' you're talkin' 'bout what they look like when they come out the freezer... If so ..yep ! Just gotta use them fast ! Or ifin' you're talkin' 'bout what they look like when they come out of my pump... I think they have to be chum...Somebody on here or somewheres else was talking about takin' a grinder and grindin' up some shad and puttin' trible hooks in an ice tray and then pourin' that ground up shad over them hooks and freezin' them works real good....unlessin' you're in hot water.... Then ya better hurry.

Soupy,:)
Keep it redneck by puttin a pop bottle full a holes into the intake of the pump.that will cut down on the suckin' from the pump.should look really homemade then.Stead of recyclein' the minnies, recycle the plastic bottle.
Pump that big should take the neck size.Just put enough holes in so the bottle do'nt collapse.

Now that I have had a sleep and an awake, I think Soupy has created the "perfect" minner contraption!
Not only will he be able to keep fish bait, but he can make "spreadable snack food". All he has to do is take the pump cleanings and put it on a sodie-cracker ..... wallla! Instant snack food....

Who says them Kaintucky fellers ain't brilliant?????

Soupy_1us
06-18-2006, 11:39 AM
Well, Here it is boys... My LIVE WELL or food processor... You see I got that farmer's waterin' trough and one of them Aerator Pumps and some hoses, car battery and charger (momma can push her truck to start it) And some of that plastic pipe and Tah Dah ! fish tank... Been working for about four days now and ain't lost but a few (that's the one that went thru the pump) Got that fixed too..All them ideas you guys come up with were good'uns but, the hole was too small for some and too big for others... So I found me a pc of spanded metal that was small enuff to bend around the hole and no more sucking them little boogers thru the pump !
Now, I got momma cooking some biscuts to feed them babies.... !!!:D So far it ain't cost me a dollar.
Now next week we're gonna build one like this to put in my boat to keep them Big fish alive 'til we can get 'em weighed. Around here if them fish are dead you don't win nuttin'...

If the Gerbels ain't dead, then don't buy a new pump!!!!! All you need is a screen. I was thinking, if you have an old window screen out in the barn, or the shed, or the garage, or under the trailor :p , or at the next door neighbors, you got it made. You will just have to keep cleaning it every few days.

I made me a needle from a bicycle spoke ( that I got offin' the neighbors bicycle).. I took the spoke and cut both ends off it and sharpin' one end to a point and took a hammer and flatten the other.. After I flatten the other end I took a real small drill bit and drilled a hole in it ( to make the eye of the needle). Then I took me a piece of mono and made me a leader with a loop in it and tie it to the needle (spoke) leavin' the loop free..
Now when I get ready to fish with them :chubs: or minners I have me some treble or triple hooks with leaders tied to them.. The bigger the :chub: the bigger the hook. I then loop the two loops together (Like a square knot but, not too tight) Then I get me a minner, cut the head offin' it and run that needle (spoke) thru the gut sack all the way thru the tail of that minner.. Pull the hook up goodin' tight to the gut sack, so them big fish can't just suck it out. After you do this untie the needle (spoke) from you hook leader. Now, the trick is to have a swivel on your main line to your pole so you can just clip this riggin' to it.. Makes it easier to fix'em up to Go after the Big'uns when they bite on this riggin' they don't get nuttin' but hook ! (hope my drawin' don't scare you) I know you guys down south there fish for them sharks like this but you use a whole lot bigger riggin's.. It works good on Blues,Channels and some slower Flatheads... (notice how I made these words bigger, That's for you older guys to see it better)

Hey Soupy, do you ever use the long rods for cattin. I talked to a feller at Reelfoot one time that liked a long rod for fishing big cats in the lilly pads there. He sat sideways with the bait about a foot or so under water in a hole in the pads w/ water running 4 ft deep. When the cat hit he set the hook and kept the cat high enough to aviod tangling in the pads. He got a few bigguns that way.:) Mike

soupy yep sure does take sunshine to run it,you can get em to charge a battery too. lookin at goin solar for my whole house.like the idea of the power company cuttin me a check.sides sunshines free.dont tell me your too far back in the sticks for it cause i just know ya gotta chainsaw or 3 hidin somewheres. lol if ya set up a pump in the tank in the boat, get 2 one to pump in and one to pump out might be a redneck but im lazy too plus fresh water dont hurt em none. illinois giller ive got a 20 ft crappie rod that i cut down to 16 ft put regular eyes on it and all and use it for bass in heavy timber and weed pockets that way ,never tried it for cats but bet it would be a blast.course that rod wears a guy out pretty quick.

I happen to like longer rods for the panfishing I do a lot of . I hadn't given it much thought why, other than good reach in tight spots.
When watching a deep sea fishing show, the capt. said something that caught my attention. He said that when bringing in the big fish, a shorter rod is MUCH easier on the arms and gives the fisherman the advantage. The long rods give the fish much more advantage. He said that if he has one of those clients on board that are miserable to work with, he always passes them the longest rod on the boat. :D The fella that I talked with at Reelfoot said the fight of the big cats in the shallow lilly pads is fast and furious, just keeping them on top for a bit is lots of work. Sometimes, if we are in heavy brush.. Not often...Most of the time I use the Eagle Claw 5 ft Boat rods..(hard to find now) Very strong and very dependable.
(I had to go check to see what rod I did use for that)... I have the "Master's" Down Rigger Graphite "C" 8 1/2 ft (Model GC88ptg) 20 lb line. Very flexable and will hold a "Big'un"... Then I an go to 12ft for my pan fish poles... One with reel built in... cheap but, good.
For my Heavy Cat fishing ( with my Penn 309s) I use the SEALINE-X ,7 footer.....Very dependable.

Went fishin' yesterday...If that wasn't bad enuff ! 4:30 AM dropped my boat in the river like I always do... Throwed my net for some shad...which should've been a sign of things to come ( throwed twenty times got 6 shad) Fired up the big Yamaha and cut out across the river...
Not knowin' where I was going, I run for about ten minutes and something told me that this looked like a good spot for a big'un...(it was where I caught my 67 pounder) .. My little Humming bird 100SX single Beam was scanning that bottm like it was hunting for "gold" Then I got me one of the "Beeps" that every fisherman loves to hear.........."Beep"... another one...I figured that I should atleast give it a try...I dropped my anchor 'bout 32 ft (nice hole) I broke out the poles.. cut the shad and hooked up... I tossed them sinkers out about 20 yards and poured me a cup of coffee...and waited..
.................................................. ..............................and waited.
.................................................. ..............................and waited?
Something was wrong, all the signs were right, the weather was from my Southwest, the river was coming up and it was mistin' rain. It was a perfect day.So I waited s'more.
Finished off that pot of coffee I had....Eat my "Zingers" I took along with me just in case I got the munchies....and I waited s'more.........nuttin'................ not a darn thing happened.. Well, I thought to myself, gonna be another one of them days......And I didn't have my camera with me.............After about two hours in my fav-o-rite hole I decided to got up river 'bout another mile.. Fired up the ole Yamahammer and started to pull out... Kick her in gear and then it happened !!! GROOOOOOOOOWL !!!! The most awful sound a man could hear.. That kinda of sound that makes ya sick to your belly....Something had come a loose in that Yamaha... Grooooowl ! I stopped her and then I started over again....GRrrrrrrrowl again I heared it...So like every good fisherman does, I turn my boat around and headed WIDE OPEN to the boat ramp..... About fours miles from where I was at.. Panic had set in..... Not that I was scared of walking....I was scared that my Yamaha was gonna fall offin' my boat....
Anyhow ( to make a long story short) I got it home, still sick to my belly, I started going over it... I put them little ear muffs on her and fired it up again... Grrrrrrrowl... Yep still there. Well, using my expertize in machanics ...I started shaking and pulling on everything I could get my hands on...Then I heard it again........Grrrrr... ( a little bit 'cause the motor ain't runnin').. I wiggled s'more...Grrr.. a little bit again... Then I found it !!!!!! That rattle or that Grrrowl... Was right there in front of my face all the time.........And here I was thinkin' about all the money I had tied up in this here motor and boat and all the money that it was gonna cost me to put a new "lower unit" in this thing............GOD, I was SICK !
But, there it was............................................... ............The Trim Tab had come loose. The guy at the boat shop that last worked on it, hadn't tightened the trim tab back up.....All that worry for nuttin''' No Fish, No Bites and then I thought that my Yamaha was gonna fall apart 'fore I got home..And I find a Trim Tab loose....................The next Grrrrrrowl you heard up here on my hill was me !
Well, today, I'm taking my boat back to the boat shop, a different one for sure ! Gonna have them check it out and see what else that other guy forgot to tightin' up......Might as well have the oil changed while I'm there....
See... not all my stories turn out to the worse.....This one might still yet have a Happy Endin'

06-21-2006, 07:06 AM
Well, I got 'er back home..... My baby.. ( for those who don't know what I'm talking 'bout it's my boat !)
Think we found what the Grrrrrrrr that was in the lower unit.. I told you I had found that the "Trim Tab" was loose well, that was part of it... The other part was that the "prop splines" are not an exact match for this motor and is causin' a viberation in the lower part of the motor.. I guess that's what you get for buying "bargin" products for your boat.. I bought this "prop" at a low discount price.. ( yeah right) Like everybody else in this world, I was trying to save a buck.... Well, as it goes for my luck, it turned out not to be a bargin... I purchased this prop from a company in North Carolina for 219 bucks ( stainless Steel) which is about a third of what a good prop would cost you... It's new, never used and he's got a bunch of them...And the reason he has so many of them , we think, can't prove it, but, they are seconds !!!!! Not exactly up to company specs....Well, this bargin has cost me so far... a days fishing, gas for the 100 mile trip to the boat shop ( 50 mi there and 50 mi back) to have it checked out and the cost of a bottle of nerves pills I had to take these last couple of days. (I did get the oil changed while I was there and I met a really nice guy at this new shop I took my boat to.)
As it turns out .. I didn't do any damage to the drive shaft on the motor, yet, But, he did say not to run it much longer.. I had a new prop, (OME) that was dinged up a little so, I left it with him to get rebuilt and when I get it back I'll have to change them out...I reckon I can use this bargin prop for a back-up...
We also found that the "Thrust Washer" behind this stainless prop was put on back-asswards when they changed out my old prop for this bargin prop...
So, I reckon the moral of this little tale is... If you think it's a bargin, it's not ! And if you think these so called "experts" that work on your equipment are perfect , most of the time they're not... These guys are just like me and you... They can screw up and it will screw up your day on the water...So.. ifin' and when you have anything worked on at the shop... Always do a "walk-around" after they work on it, make sure it's put on right and it's tight ! And that bargin stuff just don't work all the time !
This is just another day in Soupy's Adventures.

Tee

3:30 this AM , Ole Soups crawls out of bed (hung over from the nite afore, samplin' too much shine) Fishing buddies decided we were going fishing....I couldn't come up with any excuses not to go.. So off we go...
On the water by 5:30 this AM. Went lookin' for some shad....After 'bout an hour of huntin' hard we came up with one shad and one herron.... Good thing we'd been "chubin" this past week.... Well, to keep it short, 'cause I'm still not feelin' real good...We ended up using our "chubs". Baited up and waited...After 'bout an hour went by I finally got a good hit... 3 pounder (channel) another hour went by "bingo" a 4 pounder (channel).. about an hour slipped by us again, these things were bitein' slow today, I got another real good hit ! 35 and 1/2 inches and about 15 minutes later 25.6 pounder Blue....Then my cell phone rang... My fishing buddie's wife ... Here it is Sunday around dinner time ( that's twelve noon KY time) She says she's being trying to get ahold of us all morning.... The mines has been callin' all day wantin' him to come to work....Didn't have the heart to tell her that I had just turned my cell phone on :D ...All in all , it was a good day... The boat done just fine, no knocks or rattles, the fish were runnin' ( but slow) and the weather was great ! Finally a good day for Soupy and Friends !

Just a Thought...
It's 2 this AM (Wed) and I was just wonderin' about the things that have an effect on the way we fish...
One time I read on this site or another, the disscussion about the weather and it's effects on fishing and I don't think anybody came up with any concrete evidence ifin' it does have an effect on it or not.
Well, you bring an Ole Country Boy and this here High Tech Weather Stuff together, Sparks Fly...
As you can see in these pictures I've posted on here that I have caught a couple of nice ones this week... One Blue 25.6 lbs Sunday and yesterday I caught one Blue that weighed in at 17.5 lbs. Now, I ain't real smart when it come to this here weather stuff, so, I went to my Web Site called NOAA (National Weather Service) and I found a place (researhed) on there that was talking about my area Where I Fish and I compared their readings on the two days I caught these two fish to see how close together they were...
Day one: Sunday June 25 8:35 Am I got the reading of :Wind: N3 mph.......Visibility 9 miles....Weather: Fair.......Sky Condition: Clear.....Air Temp: 66 degrees....Barometer was at 30.03 inches... Now this was the exact time when I caught the 25.6 lbs catfish Sunday..
Now on Tuesday Day two: June 27 at 7:15 AM ...Winds NW 5 mph...Visibility was 7 miles......Weather was at : Few Clouds.....Air Temp was 63 degrees and the Barometer was at 29.99 inches.. Not too much differences.... Now on Sunday mornings readings I noticed that the Barometer started to rise (up 30.05in) after I caught that 25.6 lb fish and I never got another bite.....And on Tuesday morning the same thing happened , the Barometer started to rise (up to30.01in) and I didn't get anymore bites.. This could have been a coincidence but, seems funny that this was really the only changes in the weather that I had found on these two days....
So, I guess it does , in one since, have an effect on my fishing... BUT, I'm gonna have to have a lot more studies on this to make sure ......So, I'm getting ready to go back this morning to do s'more studies... I hope to have the results back by ........dinner time today (that's 12 noon KY time).................... Boy, all this here Scientific Studies shore makes a man Thirsty............gonna have to ice down s'more beer for todays studies...And with me puttin' it into all these fancy words Momma Soupy thinks I got an important job or something...

As a member of the Soupy fan club ,I'll be watching this thread closely. lol Ther is no doubt in this old fellers mind that the pressure affects the fish feeding habits. I guess it wouldn't hurt to start paying attention. I like to be there when there ia a storm front comming in . The bite can be fast and furious before a good rain. Mike

This AM about 3:30 I took a Barometric readin' and it was at 30.07 inches and I went fishin'.....Was in the water by 4:30 same AM and was fishin' by 5 this AM.
After some real hard studyin' and lots of coffee I decided that I weren't doin' so good on the river so I brung it home.... Got on this here 'puter and got my weather reports again... around 9 this AM.....And it said: 9AM....wind W 6 mpg....Visibility...10 miles.....Weather Cond..Fair.....Sky Cond... Clr......Air Temp. 77 degrees...... Barometric pressure was at 30.15 inches that's up .08 inches from the time I went 'til the time I got back.. And I "did not" get 'nary a bite all the time I was there !!!!! ( and I fished hard too)
Now this tells this Ole Country Boy somethin'....
Now keep this in your head, the river was comin' up on all three days from 'bout 17.03 ft on Sunday to 'bout 17.91 ft today and is s'ppose to go to 22.01 ft by this comin' Sunday AM...Also too, I used the same baits (shad, chubs and worms) as I did the other two days and fished the same holes !.

So, the moral if this here story is.. either don't watch the weather and go have some fun fishin' or watch the weather and stay home, save your bait !

More studyin' will have to be done at a later date.. 'cause I gotta mow the yard and go pick up my boat prop. tomorrow...

The only weather I worry about is whether or not I get the chance to get out.;)
After all a poor day of fishin' is still better than a good day of watchin' TV.Seems that when the weather is bad,and I'm home,I eat more.Maybe the same for the fish.Yathink?

Hmmmm... That's another side of this here Not so Scientific Studies.. FISH WATCHIN' TV when the Barometric Pressure is down.... I'll have to look into this s'more. Be like us watchin' TV and eating popcorn....Wonder if they got to mow their damn yards too, (like I gotta do today)....Reckon that's what "GRASS CARP" are for??

Did notice that the Barometric Pressure was fallin' yesterday afternoon ( when I'm not fishing) and some guys did catch several nice cats for a while.. It (B. pressure) started going back up after that though and they stopped catchin' ... Maybe there is something to this here Barometric Pressure stuff.. I had one old timer to tell me that it effects their blatter or something and they don't eat. Didn't know fish had a blatter???
All I know for sure is that when I'm fishing and the pressure goes up,I don't catch nuttin' and when it's falling, like, right before a storm, I catch fish... Might be something to these numbers...
I know that I'm just gonna have to do s'more studies on this, maybe tomorrow (after I get my Honey Do's done).

Soupy- Good luck on the honey-do list. Seems like mine never gets shorter. Groan lol
Was on a trip up at a Mississippi River backwaters area and seen some of those big snails sitting on the underwater rocks. Have you ever used them for cat bait? I only got 8 or 10 but will give them a try. Mike

I have used "slugs","leaches" and "Snails" with little luck...Whatever bait that is the easiest to find is the least one the Big Cats bite on around here.. Example... Shad .. a month ago you couldn't throw your net in the water without snaggin' up about fifty of those little boogers and the fish would not bite on them... Now, If you can find the "shad" you can catch all the big cats you want... I've tore up two nets in the past week trying to get shad... Can't find them anywheres....And that's all the Big Cats are hitting.

Ok..Day 3 or 4 forgot which it is... Doesn't matter, the fish still ain't bitin'.
I have talked to the "Old Timers" on the river this week... None, Zip, Nary a one is catchin' any fish.... The Barometric Pressure is still up (30.12) and staying steady. Havin' lots of trouble in findin' live bait (shad).. Hope to see a change soon...
Met with several Old Timers that fish the dams here close by and they are all telling me the same thing... NO BIG 'UNS NO PLACE !... Don't know what's going on up the river from us but, have talk to some that says the same thing....NUTTIN' ! Maybe this Barometric Pressure has got something to do with it....
Have gotten several responses on my PM on this subject and they have all been good ones... Glad to see you guys gettin' into this....
Don't know ifin' I'm fishin' today or not (yet) ain't finished my coffee yet. Might just go "CHUBIN'"

I have put "feelers" out everywheres on this subject but, I haven't gotten any real Sceintific Answers yet....

Bringing her to a close after today.
Started my day on the river this morning about 5 AM The Barometric Pressure was standing at 30.08 a little hight I thought but, was gonna give it a try... Got to my best hole and set 6 lines out... Baited with "chubs", cut shad and Junnies Shad Bait (dip or stink bait) after a couple big bites and no catches I noticed something wrong.. The only bites I was getting was on stink bait... Messed around for about an hour and caught 6 channels about 2 to 6 lbs.....Nary a big'un today.... Started getting pretty hot so I called it a day... After I dressed these little ones I checked out the weather and sure enuff there it was... Barometric Pressue had jumped up to 30.16... Now I know that this Barometric Pressure has an effect on my fishng.... Guess I'm gonna have to watch the weather a little closer ifin' I'm going after that big 'un..
As I said at the start of this post... I'm bringin' it to a close... The Facts are in...!!!

Soupy 1,That is the best explanition of how barometric pressure effects
the movement of fish that i have read, but it dosent mean that the fish
wont feed,it just means when the pressure is high they hunker down and
wont chase the bait, you have to put it in there mouth, they didnt mention
catfish but i think the same rules apply. As far as humans go,all that i can
say for sure about that is when the pressure gets high i can feel it in
my head, must fill up the empty space between my ears. as we all know the
moon controls the tides and all living things on our planet,if we wait on the
perfect conditions there would be a lot less fishing going on.It is a proven
fact that when the moon is full, the emergency rooms are a lot more busy,
than any other time of the month due to the rise in the crime rate,do we
not venture out on a fishing trip for fear of being attacked,I think not.;)
Kirk

Soupy_1us
07-02-2006, 10:46 PM
I have found over the years ifin' the moon is full at nite.... You're wastin' your time fishing the next day... Reason behind this is I figured that they (the fish) were feeding at night...(beings that most fish are nocturnal to start with) so far proves right with me.. Catch more fish on the nights of the full moon than the day after... But, if you go back over my post I think I also said something to the affect of "Either go fishing, waste some bait and have some fun" or "stay home, mow the yard".. I don't think I told anyone to wait for the perfect day... I'm from Kentucky, I'm not stupid ! The only people that wait for the perfect day to fish are the people that don't fish to start with. A perfect day of fishing to me can be a day that I don't bring home any leftover bait......or fish either ! As long as I'm with good friends and have plenty to eat and drink. Not many days of fishing goes by me that I don't bring home something....(including a hangover sometimes)
That link was sent to me by somebody that was s'ppose to be a professional fisherman ( and we all know how that goes) Hell, as far as that goes, I'm a professional fisherman... Sometimes I trade some fish for some tators and beans so, that's a profit to me ! Also too... This thread is for entertainment only, not to be taken to heart. ( and I was bored and had to have something to write about)

I'm not happy today !
I do all this Not So Sceintific Studyin' on How the Weather Screws with my fishing... Keywords MY FISHING !
Today the Barometric Pressure was at 30.27... the highest I've seen it in a while and the weather was from the EAST/NORTHEAST all the signs were against me... But, what about the guy in the boat with me???? WHy weren't they against him?????
Started off this morning getting shad.....Taking him to my favorite spot... Where the Big 'uns were...
His name.... Lyndel.... friend of mine.....
We bait up ... cut bait... shad.... chuck our lines out to the "big hole"... where the Big 'uns are waiting... and they were.... First one "HE" gets....15 1/2 lb Blue......Next one "HE" gets 7 lb Flathead.......Next one "HE" gets....4 lb Channel......Next one "HE" gets...3 lb Channel.......Next one "HE" gets ...2 lb Channel........Then all of a sudden....I get a BITE!.......not even big enuff to weigh Channel..............OK,ok............'nuff said... WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH THIS WEATHER THING??????? Whyis it , it just affects "ME" and "not" the people in my boat.
Look real close at the last pic. I posted... That "HAT".. I know you can't see it that well but, It's my EXTRA WIF hat that I was sent by SCHOE.. I let the guy have it 'cause I wanted him to have it.....AND HE DON"T EVEN HAVE A COMPUTER !!!!!!!! Just my Luck..

Now Soupy, I thought I teached you better!
If the above had happened to me, I would have told it this way...........

I got up this mornin, extra early, cause I was going to take my "friend" Lyndel fishin. I took him in my boat, pulled it with my truck, and we went to my favorite fishin hole. Now cause he is such a "good friend", I wanted to make sure that he caught some fish. So while he wasn't lookin, being the "kind-christian-charitable" feller that I am, I cut the point off my hook so I could "let" him catch all the fish........

Now doesn't that "sound better"???????

Well Soupy,
All boils down to too much technology (sorry about that),that we fill our heads with.Brings to mind when we were much younger, and went fishin' with a cut sapling, butchers twine, and a rusty fine wire hook.Did'nt know a bit about where you were supposed to fish,or what days were good or bad.Just speared a crawler on that #8 rusty hook and threw it in as far as the line and pole would reach. You were sure to catch a fish that the old fishermen would drop their jaws at.
Then we get older and fancier, and we are ready to catch that old lunker.Find him on the recorder,Bait up our $200.00 rod and reel filled with fluorcarbon line and a xx strong 10/0 hook. Then we sit and wait for that rod buster fish to bite.
Sure enough, some youngster will come down to the bank with a cut sapling, butchers twine, and a #8 rusty hook, and pitch it in close to you.
You know the rest. That fish will grab on to his set up and darned near pull the kid in.He will run up the bank and drag a monster fish over the snags, through the rocks, and on shore. There you are with your jaw dropping to the bottom of your $3000.00 high tech boat.
God smiles down at the less informed by blessing them with divine luck, and making them more eagar than ever to learn more, and get better modern equipment. In a short time the whole story will repeat itself over and over.Shows that he does work in mysterious ways. Also shows he has a great sense of humor.
So do'nt feel too bad Soupy,It is meant to be that way.:D

Well, we did it.. The perfect trotline....
First we started off with 400 ft with some 900 lb test trotline nylon cord...Put them pretty little brass clips on there every 5 (five ) ft so the hooks wouldn't slip or slide , made up some right nice anchors that would grip in the bottom real good, put our hooks on about an 18 inch leader with them clip thingys on the so we wouldn't have to tie all them on the main line, then with an ole inner tube cut into bubber bands we tied to our line to the anchors so it would give some stretch so the fish couldn't rip-a-lip by pullin' on it and then we had my buddy at our local machine shop make up a reel (like a big fishing reel) to roll our trotlines off and on (patent pending)... Got our bait and went to the river.
As you can see in the pictures... How we mounted it to a boat seat pedestal (tall one) so it would roll over the front of the boat without snaggin'. All we had to do was turn the boat into the current so it would drift backwards and let her roll out, clippin' the hooks with the bait on it...to the main line...
When you were ready to take up the trotlines all you had to do is snag up your line and tie it back onto the spool and reel it in like a big rod and reel...Work Great on our two 400 ft lines.....
Now the catch.....................................50 hooks to each trotline (400ft) at 5 ft part.... Anchors on each end with floats tied to them so we could find them.... 30 minutes each to set the lines out, 45 minutes each to take the lines back up........after setting over night.........and a half of a day trying to find bait................
.Not that first darn fish ! Nuttin',nary zip,notta.....only thing we caught was leaves , trash and sticks.... The darn river jumped up about a foot during the night and the current got so bad that the trash was all over everything we had put in the water.... So I reckon the moral of this story is "Don't matter how perfect you equipment is, ifin' the fish ain't hungry , ya ain't gonna catch them"..........Just my LUCK again !

Soupy, Sure hope you mean that you just don't want your own thread! Yea, we aren't very good at responding here sometimes.
As for your line set up now that is really neat. So many years ago my uncle had a commercial fish market on the Mississippi in Keithsburg, IL. I used to help him sometimes laying out and taking in the 100 hook lines. Like most all fishermen then, he had a rack in the back of the boat that held a shallow line cradle that had saw kerfs along the edge for the baited hooks. He would just throw out the weight and take off slowly. All $%^&#@ would break out if they got tangled. lol I spent a lot of boyhood hours untangling the lines when they got tangled bringing them in. A real reel set up like you used would have been a Godsend. :D
Lots of fond memories when I harken back to the days spent in the wooden flat bottoms then.
Thanks for all your input, Mike

I ain't never seen nuttin' like it before or since.....Nice little pond with swimmin' stuff all around it.. The guy told me it was about ten foot deep in the middle... A feller came by this morning and wanted me to do some sand blasting for him.....Kinda let my mouth over load my butt this time... Back a couple years ago I told this guy that I was doing some blasting for us and a few others , told him that I would do a truck for him.....a couple of years ago......well he decided that he was gonna take me up on this little venture...But, now it's a horse trailer instead of a truck.. Couldn't come up with no excuses this time, it's not like I'm real busy or something.. I can't say I don't have time 'cause the fish are bitin'... SO, as good hearted as I am I told him Monday afternoon.. I reckon that's gonna put a damper to my fishing for a couple of days....But, I will be back, that's for shore. Asian Carp and/or Bigheads are becoming a very dangerous fish in our waters. They are not good for nuttin' 'cept turtle bait and cat food.
They have been known to knock people out of their boats and to screw up some good net sets...and they hurt too... ( I got one in the back one time).. Kentucky way of dealin' with them.... CUT BAIT ! ... When we get 'em in the boats with us , they never see the water again (alive)... In cool waters they can be used for Catfish Bait.. Use the sides (fillets) and or guts.. Kinda like cut Shad. The smaller ones (3 to 6 in.) just put them on a hook. The Big Blues like 'em ! Just my two bits worth.

Something else I found.

However, the Asian carp do have something positive going for them. Unlike the bottom-feeding common carp, the Asian carp taste good! Private entrepreneurs are commercially processing silver and bighead carp caught from the Illinois River. Their flesh is firm, slightly translucent, and white and mild-tasting when cooked. Maybe chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans will invent a wildly popular recipe for Asian carp. If we can't stop these boater-smacking invaders, let's eat them! (Dan Wilcox is a biologist with St. Paul District)

Don't think so ... ! Somebody on here said it all when he said: If It's Got Scales, It's Bait !

All the old Pros that I have talked to down here says there ain't no way to catch them unlessin' you got a net out... But, on the other side of this story I've heard of kids catchin' the on pole and line using worm and bobber. (go figure).. My understanding is that they are algae eaters and that's why they are going to screw up our fishing 'cause the Paddle Fish (Spoonbill Cats) and Shad eat the same thing and we might run short of food for them...All I know for sure is that they do hurt when they hit you in the back while scullin' ( trolling for you city folk) up the river in your boat. And that our sloughs and smaller creeks are being over run by them down here. Hell, ya can't throw a line out in the water without hittin' one in the head.

S'more info I found on them carp.
Bighead and silver carp are voracious filter feeders and eat algae and small animals that are the basis of the Great Lakes food chain. They eat up to 40 percent of their body weight every day.

I'm glad to hear some of you are concerned about me but, not to worry... Yes , it's been "HOT" but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.... 5 hours of washing, 21 hours of sand blasting and primerin' and all we gotta do now is rub it down (sand paper) and wash it again, mask it off and shoot it.... Not rotted out as bad as I thought it was gonna be.. Lot's of surface rust and the walls inside had very little rot at the bottom...Think we'll have her out by Monday ( if the rain stops) and then I'm back on the river. One good thing about it, a young lady friend of his has seen it and wants it as soon as we "git-ur-done" ! Boy, sure is nice to be retired !

Beings I live right on the river ( about a mile away) Yep, you're right, I can hear it every morning "Come and get me, we're waitin' for you"..
My buddy , up the road is hollerin' about settin' nets this week. He went down to check it out and said that we couldn't put them in the river around here now 'cause the current was too swift.. ( I think it's just too hot for him).. I told him that I wasn't really interested in helpin' him again, the last time I helped him it was like a job or something... We put two 100 yard nets in the river for about 4 hours and when we run them, we took in about 1800 lbs of fish... Now I'm gonna tell you guys , THAT's WORK ! and I'm not gonna do that anymore.. I'll just stay with my one or two every-now-and- then catfish....
I know you guys have been worryin' about me and my bass fishin' (like you have even give it a second thought ). I finally broke down and ordered me a "Brand New Reel". I got me one of them "DAIWA" 120B Procaster reels from our ole buddies at BassPro and figured while I was orderin' I'd get me a bunch of them Hard Plastic Minners and stuff. Ended up spendin' just about all my Egg Money for this week...( let's put it this way....glad I'm doing that horse trailer) But, it was still "cheaper" than what I could buy them around here, even with shippin' cost added in. Now, all I gotta do is find them bass....(and get some time to go fishin')
Well, it's back to the grind stone... Gotta do s'more sanding 'fore we paint.. Hope to get it done by Monday...Then I can get back to my fish stories... I break out in a sweat just talking about work.

Gonna try to do some Fall Bass fishing down here on Trade Water River... Man can get him a couple doz squirrels while he's catchin' some of them bass down there..
Well, it ain't perfect but it's done... (horse trailer) be leavin' here tomorrow after I get a check in hand...Bad part is I think he's got a couple of more he wants us to do.....I think he's just gonna have to wait 'til winter to get 'em done. I'm going fishing !

But, we were trying to help a friend out a little..The old guy that owns this trailer is like most of us on here... Ok, we all know that when you hear a fish story that there is a story behind the story you are hearin'...
I just told you a short story about my fishing this past Sunday. And as always we have a few guys and gals on here that doubt my ability (as I do sometimes) to fish or to catch fish.
Ok, so I didn't catch any "Big'uns " this last trip... It happens... It happens to all of us at one time or 'tother. BUT ! I have a story for you... This one is very much true... It did happen.. I was there....but, the batts. in my camera were dead (wouldn't you know it, the one time I really needed it).
I had put in around 4:30 that AM as normal, I went to my favorite hole....Baited up tossed my line out and waited.... ......... ..... ....... .... ....... and waited... Nuttin' happened.... So, as most good fishermen do... I said sc*%w it and packed up to move on.
I came back down the river (the Ohio) was thinking about going down to Tradewater River to try to hit on some big large mouth bass... Well,as I got about half way back to the boat ramp (where I had put in this AM) I saw something or someone along the bank of the river... It was two people (girls over 18)..... One was in the water...
Now you have to keep in your head that it's about 6 o'clock this AM.....It's not unusual to see someone swimming in the river on a Sunday in this part of the world but, it's about 6 this AM and no sandbar or beach within miles of where we were at. This water was about 30 ft deep just offin' the bank and the one "girl" was about neck deep in the water and now, get this.... She had two fishin' poles in her hands... One in each hand.....Neck deep in about 30 ft of water and.... was hollerin' HELP ME, Help US.... Now I could understand it when she said HELP ME... But, when she said HELP US.... it kinda throwed me a little bit... The other girl was still on the bank (drinkin' a beer) She weren't in no trouble, unlessin' she was about to run out of beer or something......Well, being as good of a man as I am... Two young "MERMAIDS" in destress, I shut down this here big 90 hp and turned toward the bank... As I got closer to the young lady in the water I could see that she was in over her head... and I don't mean the water either... She had two poles in her hands and a cigarette in one hand... She was tryin' not to get it (cigarette) wet... She acted like it was her last one or something....In water over her head, two fishing poles in her hands and all she was worried about was getting that cigarette wet????
Well, I got stopped and was checkin' out the sit-u-a-tion ... Seems like these two young things were gonna do some fishin' and some how got their poles all wrapped up with each other... I'm talkin' about some kinda mess... The line was all tied up in knots and around the poles. Well, you get the idea... Kinda like the mess we get into after a long day on the river, not catchin' nuttin' and we just throw our poles in the back of the truck kinda mess.
Now ...I did do what all you other guys out there would do..... I got their lines fixed up so they could fish....(never did figure out what they were fishin' for......they didn't even have no bait)...Well.. to make a long story short... Yes the one in the water did have one of them itty-bitty bikini thingys on and the other was fixin' to take her clothes off ,... I thought she was gonna try to save her friend that was already in the water or something....I told her not to worry... I had her friend hangin' on my boat and I would see to it that she wouldn't drown or something.....
Well, after about an hour, of untanglin' them lines,( they were really messed up) (the lines too) I got them two ladies some bait from my bait bucket and baited their lines for them... Then told them that I had to git... The fish were waitin' for me down the river....I went on my way...proud as a peacock, that I had helped two young ladies on that river bank that was in need of helpin...
No... I didn't tell the wife about this... She wouldn't have beleived me no how.. She knows there ain't no "Mermaids" in the river (Ohio) and as for them young ladies... they weren't there when I went back to check on them later that day... I reckon they had caught all the fish they wanted... Go figure..... and I didn't catch a thing...
Besides...you guys know how hard it can be to catch fish when you really don't have your mind on fishin'.

OH,Those races:rolleyes:
I do seem to remember way back when a girl I was sweet on,parked on a ledge overlooking a lake watching for submarines.Next day I read in the paper that the ledge had broken off and deeped sixed in the lake.
Funny how it happened after we had gone. One of lifes mysteries,I guess.

Well,I'm gettin' my composure back after that " Submarine Race" thingy.. :D
That got too good for me I had to take a break....I guess I shouldn't have even brought it up...
Anyhow.. The Ohio River is still playing around 14.5 to 15.5 feet. Lowest it's been in a while around here... I haven't even had time to put my boat in to see ifin' those big'uns were going to the holes are not...
My other fishing buddy (Owen) who uses nets all the time, came by to tell me that I would be wastin' my time going fishin' this week... Says he set out a 1000 yards of nets the other day and just brought in 400 lbs .... That's not good ! These guys are use to bringin' in about a 1000 lbs per net (100 yds per net).. Did say that he had gotten in some of them "BullHeads", "BigHeads" "Silver"or "Jap" Carps whatever they're calling them this week... Tore the nets up....Said they had a couple thousand lbs in one net and they didn't even slow them down....Guess that would be a problem for them nets...( I figured it was them MERMAIDS with switchblades that got them nets)
Just thought I'd tell you guys that we aren't havin much fun up here right now But, I will put in tomorrow morning and I WILL have my camera ready and I WILL catch some big ole catfish....and you know ifin' I do something stupid you WILL know about it. (with pics) Later. I'm going to find some bait.

We went, we caught and yes he beat me again! I'm sick of it...
After a hour of hunting shad and trying to get to our favorite spot, five minutes after he puts out his first line.... 16.8 lbs Blue...........................I haven't even got a line in the water yet !
Then we went to out second favorite spot...............................five minutes after we got there he gets a bite................and then I get one.......................At the same time we doubled up..... his was and Blue 6.6 lbs and mine was 9.9 lb Channel... It was too hot to stay much longer.... Good news... nuttin' stupid happened, 'cept he beat me again.... I'm gonna leave him at home tomorrow... Gotta go clean fish...It just so happens to be my day to do that.

Soupy,
Glad to see you are at least on the + side of fish again.9.9 channel is nothing to sneeze at.Could have been a worse day of fishing. That still is a nice hefty stringer of fish.Gotta change the attitude a mite. When friends are fishing together it is "We caught".You tag teamed those fish together. It is only competition when you are fishing against another team.I'm sure you enjoyed the catches he made as well as he did.Combined effort won out this time.
You have a good partner and friend there.Hope you both catch a bunch next trip out.

We Caught ...Hell ! .. You ain't never fished out of my boat....This guy , MY BUDDY, even wanted me to take pictures and print them out so he could take them to work to prove that he beat me again.... !
I think the next time I'll just push him out of the boat. Ifin' he catches the big one first......
By the way... I did catch a 3.5 foot Gar....Didn't get no pics. of that though.. Too busy trying to get it out of the boat.
I'm like Capt Kirk..... When the lines hits the water....the race is on ! And I don't care who ya are. That makes for a good day on the river.....:D

Soupy,
"OWCH":p You are a stone hard man to fish with.Poor guy has to bring a weapon with him for protection in yer boat.I hope he at least wears his PFD at all times, case you do throw him overboard. I would guess that the majority of the time I take someone along,"specially females",they catch as many or more than I do.I take it as a guide thing. As long as I put them on the fish,I'm happy.A nice stringer of fish is a success story.Sure there is a lot of friendly ribbing on who caught what, and how many. That is what friends are all about.
You can puff yer chest and beat it with your fists, but we all know that you would'nt trade the moments on the water with a good fishing companion for anything.I can think of how many good times I've had with with those that are dead and buried, and smile about the day that...............
Keep those posts coming Soupy,We all know that under all the gruffness lies a heart of gold.:) I would still share a boat with you anytime.:D

Soupy,
I'm not too sure that you should come down to the FCC this year.:p After the Soupy weekend Hushpuppy and I had. Those stories about your team and our team getting around would have all the rest of the teams falling outa their rigs laughing, causing too much work for the search and rescue volunteers fishin them outa the water.Just might be too much for them to handle:rolleyes: It would be he-- to pay with them gettin all tangled up in our lines as they drift by.Good thing that may come out about it is that there would always be stories to tell around the campfires.I'm not too sure I would want to be remembered in that fashion.;)
Oh heck,c'mon down and we'll take a chance at it.We can always password protect our future posts so only a select few can view them.:D

Well, 3:30 this AM I decided to go give it another try.... This time I left everybody at home :).... I slipped of afore anybody else got home. Lyndel (that's my fishin' buddy you see in all them pictures I post, the one that catchin' all the damn fish) had to work last night so, he didn't get home in time to get his nap in and Moma Soupy was still at work. I hooked up to the Redneck Yacht and headed for the Ohio River....
Which, I figured out later this AM was a stupid thing to do, with my luck and all.
I got my bait real quick... Now let me 'splain something here..... We figured that when you get your bait real quick, Like I did this AM, and get a bunch of it, the fish ain't gonna bite.... Well, ole Soups was right again !
Had a bucket full of shad any wheres from 2 in to 8 in good 'uns..... Got to my favorite hole ,baited up and tossed her out...
I waited............................................ .............................................and waited..................................and then I caught me one of them Flatheads... It was about 9...........................................inches long....... Now you know I can't keep this one so I turned 'er loose. Now I wished I hadn't ... ' cause to have it my way..... it was the only thing I caught today....Now I did post a picture so I wouldn't have to 'splain to some of you what this means... So look close at what I caught today...
Now for the good news for some of you...It's not looking so good up here , for my trip to the FCC....I'll 'splain later as I find out more about what's going on here.
But, for now, it looks like I got one going to Texas ( with her sick sister) and one going to Mexico ('cause his company he works for in makin' him go down and show them how to run their equipment so they can send another USA factory down there.)and the other is gonna have to stay with her mother('cause she's gotta a bun in the oven). That means that there ain't gonna be nobody to stay here at the ranch ifin' I leave. Just have to wait and see...

Yes we did .... 3 this Thursday AM we loaded up and went to the Ohio River again... Me and Ole Lyndel.. You remember Lyndel.. that's the guy that beats me everytime we go out....
Well, today was different.. We finally got my boat in the water... Had trouble finding it.... the water, not the boat......It was so foggy this AM we couldn't find the water after we got to the river... Got the boat in about 5 this AM and it took us
