After a full days rest from the great trip north with Schoe, I joined my 2 grandsons on a trip into southern Iowa in quest of the bull gills.
The boys had played around on the tying vise before we left, and that got us to the lake around 11:00 am. That actually worked out for the best though, because Brandon (12th birthday) had come up with a 1/80 oz. jig w/ olive mariboo and Chartuse Krystal flash tail and black sparkle body. He quite literally stomped us good with the catching with that combo. :D He was using a Bass Pro 7 1/2' 4 piece pack rod, and Procaster reel loaded with 8lb Fireline.I don't think we got any pounders but too close to care. There is a beach on this lake and I let the boys swim while I cleaned the 51 we kept.
When I finished, I sent Jonathon up to get the Jeep. He brought it down to the ramp, backed it in, I ran on the trailer and he pulled me out. While we were getting the gear in the Jeep, a fella in a car drove over and said he would like to shake Jonathon's hand. It turned out he was a driving instructor with a student driver in the car. He said " That is some of the best driving I've ever seen" He was shocked that he was only 11. Now I am burdened with a grandson with a VERY swelled head. lol
The next day we returned to the lake late to find it full of boats and didn't get many and decided to make a run west for some different lakes. We arrived in time for the kids to enjoy the motel pool. In the morning we hit a very small lake and picked up a couple doz. gills. We then went to another nearby lake with a cleaning station. The kids dropped me at the cleaning station and while I worked on the gills they put the boat in and went to a close bank to fish for a bit. There was a couple at the cleaning station that informed me that the bite was off. They had been out all day and only got 6 gills. By the time I got my fish cleaned and talked with the couple for a bit, the kids came back with a dozen. I cleaned them and went with them for a bit. We got a couple dozen more nice ones and were chased off the lake by a storm. Always seems to be a neat experiance to get out with the kids. Mike
