How do you clean American Shad?

Do any of you out there know to clear the American Shad ? they have Y bones and are way too bony for me. But I have heard that they are great eating. The California Fish and Game put a pamphlet out years ago but I can no longer find it. Please can anyone help.:confused:

I'm thinking that they may be cleaned like northern pike if they have Y bones. You take the fillet knife and run it along both sides of the Y bones to remove the fillet's.

or the skipjack herring "shad" we use fer bait but i bet they would work as bait lol

yeah? we have used them for bait before with no luck,you can catch them all day in the fall down behind the "mark" in moline on a simple bobber rig.

hmmm all i get is gizzard shad and take toooooo many to make ameal!!!

that is about all i use fer bait is skipjacks when i can get them fresh. have tried them frozen just don't seem ta be the same. gizzard shad work too but not like the skipjacks or herring. i have also used the mooneyes but still not as good for cut bait but hard ta beat for a live bait.

only way ta use mooneyes is live lol.flats an blues love them lil ones,got a few spots i can git em with my throw net...git big ones round here on artificials,lil disapointin when yer expectin it to be a big white or bass.
