I wouldn't say it was the heaviest fish, but it certainly was the longest I've caught. I'm talking about the longnose gar I caught this past May. You don't catch many on rod and reel. It weighed in at about a pound, and was 26" long. Really a beautiful fish, not many agree with me but I think they are. Then in July I hooked into another, this one I got up to the dock, my buddy Mike went down to net him, got the beak in, but the gar turned to my right and gave one good thrust, then got off the hook. I was so mad, still am. This longnose was AT LEAST 36", probably closer to 40". The 26 incher is getting stuffed, and is almost done at last check. That one that got off would've gotten stuffed too I think if I had landed him. That definately would've been the longest fish I've ever caught.

I don't think I've ever caught a gar, they remind me alot of a baby spoonbill for some reason :) every fisherman has got the "one that got away" fish story, it sucks when it happens to you! sorry about yours :(

THE GAR
is a pre historic fish and has survived, how ever long pre historic means.
i sas setting in my boat with the dip net laying on the side of the boat
in just enough water to keep a few bait fish alive, when all the sudden
a GAR came crashing his nose thru the net trying to attack the bait, well
i saved the net but he put a very large hole in it that tooka large repair,
NOTE TO SELF dont do that again.
