Hi, My name is Kyle, I am mostly into computers(I have a computer website/forum if you guys want to check if out, or having compy problems, http://xtechforum.com )and have recently gone fishing with a friend of mine. This was both our first time fishing.

I saw a ad in craigs list which started it all, I picked up 3 pols and reels and a fly fishing pole for 15$ along with a assorstment of hooks and some old old can of baitish stuff.

We have no clue how to fish or have been, except a on monday when we went for our first time. My friend did not catch anything, and I caught one fish. We were out for 6-7 hours. It was still fun though because we can to talk and basicly do what we would do at home except without the "So....What do you want to do?" " I dont know, what do you want to do?" and it was cheap. 3$ for parking, and 20$ for a permit. 20$ for 6-7hours doesn't seem that bad to me :)

Before we went we got a assortment of lures and we got this blood catfish bait this "cheese" marshemellow type stuff andsomethign else i cant even remember now.

Anyways, we want to go again tomorrow but we are looking for some tips on how to actually fish and catch something :P

What I did at least was let my hook and bait sink to the bottom because I figured thats where the catfish would most likly be, and there is mostly catfish in the lake during summer(Or so they said)

What something told me after though is that chanell catifish in california aer nlike to be all the way on the bottom.

How would i have it stay off the bottom to a catifish level, and what about just the middle of the lake for other types of fish?

Any tips for catfish? We are mainly looking for catfish since the website for the lake and everyone we talked to at the laake said bass and catfish are most popular during the summer, but its illegal to take bass out of the lake, and we are looking for some good food :P Alhtough I wouldn't mind catching some bass and just throwing them back for the fun of it either.

fish they said were in the lake that i can remember are bass catifhs bluegill and perch.

Any tips on what works good and how to actually fish well? and sorry for this massive post. ANY INFO would be nice. We are going fishing tomoror morning, we are going to go a little ealier then last time to, last time we got there around 7ish, this time we are going to aim for 6:30ish

Edit: and If it helps at all, i know a lot about fish, just not fishing. I am a aqaurim enthust that is just now getting deeply into saltwater.(I have kept all kinds of freshwater, from community guppys mollies, to arrowana's and knifes, and bichers, and all kinds of chiclids, and peacock bass, some ambush preds, and now i have a saltwater tank with 2 puffers a loin fish ell and a grouper, and i just started a reef tank that is cycling with live sand and live rock)

edit again: also the fish i got was about 16inches long and that was the only bite i had all day that i know of, my friend had several bites but none of his fish got hooked.

Welcome Xycose, glad to see you on our site. As just a beginner in the sport of fishing it is hard to tell someone how and where to start. I guess the best thing is to keep on trying different places and possibly talk to and watch how other people are fishing. Pay close attention to their techniques and what baits they are using.
We will try our best to answer specific questions and help you to the best of our ability. Schoe

Thanks!

Mainly I have a few quesiotns then would just like some tips.

What size hook should we be using for chanell catifh 1-5lbs

how do you get it to stay in the middle of the water and nto bottom or top? Would placing a wieght in the 5 feet into the line, then place a floating thingy on the end work? So then it owuld be 5 feet from the bottom? I'm not sure if a fish would go after one of those floating things if it was like that or not.

What baits do you guys suggest for cats?

Anyother input or comments/quggestions would be great!

look for a weed edge and fish outside of it. Put on a plain hook with a night crawler on it and put a bobber on so your bait is about 3-4 ft away from it and let er buck. That would also be a good spot to throw spinner baits and crank baits for bass along the weedline. With nightcrawlers you'll catch perch, sunnies and cats.

For more info watch some of the fishing shows on the outdoors channel if you have it.

Kyle
Welcome to WIF..it is a great family and I look forward to your being a part of it

Here is a link to a friend of mine that fishes out in SO Cal and is one of the
best catfishermen I know
I can tell you different techniques and baits and hooks for my area, but
I think the lakes out in So Cal which are pay and stocked are a bit diffferent
Brians website is filled with a lot of local knowledge that should be
good for getting you started

Listen to what crappe girl said. Weeds porvide oxygen, food, and cover for bait fish, and where there is food for the small ones, the bigger ones will be just as close. I'd look for trees, brush, and stumps in the water as well.
